Box Score DANVILLE, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball came from five runs down and won 8-5 in 10 innings as No. 5 CNU upset No. 2 Johns Hopkins on day one of the NCAA South Regional Wednesday.
It was just the second time in 16 games the Blue Jays had been held to five runs or less as they average more than 10 runs per outing.
JHU roughed up Christopher Newport's starter, Kenny Moreland, for three runs in the first and two more in the second. The senior right hander, who leads the nation in wins, settled down and retired 22 of his last 25 batters he faced and 12 straight at one point.
Moreland tossed nine innings, allowed five runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out five. His younger brother, Kevin, tossed a perfect 10th for his second save of the year.
The Captains pushed across a run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 5-1. In the seventh, CNU scored four times to tie the game at 5-5. The inning was highlighted by Chris Despins' two-run single which tied the score.
Christopher Newport struck for three runs in the 10th. Eric Cole's RBI single proved to be the game-winner. Cole scored on a wild pitch and Travis Medina's triple that scored Parker Neal added two insurance runs.
Despins finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Medina was also 2-for-4 as Alex Owen, Trae Bailey, Ryan McDougal, Cole and Neal each had one hit in the win.
The Blue Jays fall to 34-6 and CNU improves to 29-12. Johns Hopkins will play Randolph-Macon at 11 am and the Captains meet Lynchburg at 7 pm.
