Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport baseball player Kenny Moreland became the third player in program history to have his number retired and promptly went out and threw a one-hitter as the Captains split a doubleheader with visiting York (PA) Sunday afternoon.
Moreland joins Mark Parnell and Matt Turner as the only three players in program history to have their jerseys retired.
After the ceremony, Moreland went out and led the Captains to a 6-0 win as he allowed one hit, which came to the second batter of the game. He walked one and struck out nine to improve to 12-0 on the year.
With the win, Moreland snaps a tie with Rob Dye for the most wins in a single season. Moreland also set the record for the most wins in a career earlier in the year when he passed Mike Cosby. Moreland has now won 35 games.
CNU plated the only run it would need in the bottom of the second on Matt Neal's sacrifice fly that scored Ryan McDougal.
Christopher Newport scored five times in the fourth with the big blow coming off the bat of Matt McDaniel who blasted a two-run home run.
Mike Giarrizzi finished 4-for-4 and drove in a run. David Fennessey was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Spartans took game two, 5-2.
The Captains took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Alex Owen singled in Giarrizzi and Trae Bailey followed with a solo shot.
York caught a break in the fifth on an error and scored all five of its runs on four hits in the inning.
Giarrizzi was 2-for-3 for CNU.
Brandon Berry went five innings, allowed five unearned runs on six hits, walked two and struck out three for the loss.
York is now 12-26 on the year. The Captains are 28-12. CNU may make up a couple its postponed games from earlier in the year. Check the CNU Athletics website for all the details.
