NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad opened USA South play on a positive note by upending NC Wesleyan, 7-3, Saturday afternoon at Captains Park.

CNU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Chris Despins RBI single that scored Mike Giarrizzi with two outs.

The Captains scored two more in the bottom of the third. Trae Bailey's double and Eric Cole's single each scored a run for Christopher Newport.

The Bishops cut the lead to 3-2 by scoring single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings.

CNU took control by scoring four in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Kenny Moreland picked up win number three on the year by tossing eight innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out eight.

Despins led the Captains offensive attack, finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cole was 2-for-5 with three RBI and Ryan McDougal and Parker Neal each finished 2-for-4.

NC Wesleyan falls to 11-3 overall on the year and 0-1 in USA South play. Christopher Newport improves to 7-2 on the year and 1-0 in conference action. These same two teams will square off again Sunday, first pitch is 2 pm.
