Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad opened the 2008 season on a positive note by shutting out Hampden-Sydney, 11-0, Tuesday afternoon at Captains Park.
The Captains exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. CNU also scored three times in the bottom of the seventh. Christopher Newport slugged 17 hits while four pitchers limited the Tigers to just one hit.
Kenny Moreland picked up his first win by throwing five shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out six. Josh Hankins, Chris Malvagna and Kevin Moreland closed for CNU.
Chris Despins led the Captains offense by clubbing a monster home run to straight away centerfield. He finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Eric Cole was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Parker Neal also finished 2-for-4. Ryan Norris finished 3-for-4. Trae Bailey also had two hits while scoring twice.
Christopher Newport is now 1-0 on the year while HSC falls to 1-5. CNU returns to action Thursday when they host Eastern Mennonite with first pitch set for 3 pm.
