Football Holds Off Averett, 19-13

The Captains of Christopher Newport won their seventh straight game Saturday, holding off the Cougars of Averett, 19-13. The win at POMOCO Stadium matches CNU's all-time football winning streak.
 
CNU now is 7-1 and 6-0 in the USA South. The Captains will host Ferrum next Saturday for the USA South Championship at POMOCO Stadium.
 
Tunde Ogun surpassed the 200-yard mark for the fourth straight week, rushing for 228 yards and a touchdown. Ogun set a new single season rushing mark in the history of the USA South Athletic Conference and has now rushed for 1453 yards this season and scored 14 touchdowns.
 
Jay Graham booted two field goals, and Jay Kirland picked off two passes for the Captains, holding off the Cougars second-half rally.
 
Matt Long connected with Ray Grenke for a 20-yard TD pass for CNU's other score in the win.
 
Averett falls to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the USA South.
 
Next Saturday's Championship game with Ferrum will kick off at 1 pm at POMOCO Stadium, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
