2008 (Junior) - After two outstanding years as a defensive back, he stepped into the vacant quarterback role, a position he played in high school, and had a fine year...Directed CNU to one of its best years ever with an 8-2 record, USA South championship and NCAA playoff berth...Gave the Captains a running option at QB, gaining 275 yards during the season with touchdowns against Salisbury and Ferrum...Picked up over 40 yards three times, with a best of 41 yards, on just seven carries, against Greensboro...Had 150 yards passing, on nine completions on 17 attempts, versus Maryville, and added 116 yards in the win over Ferrum and 104 in the Wilkes game...Tossed TD passes in games with Maryville, N.C. Wesleyan and Averett.
2007 (Sophomore) - First Team All-USA South as a defensive back after leading the Captains in tackles and intercepting five passes...Had 11 total tackles in the season-opening win over tenth ranked Rowan, including five solos...Also had eight total, with five unassisted versus N.C. Wesleyan and six total tackles in games with Mary Hardin-Baylor, Salisbury, Greensboro and Maryville. In the Rowan game he also picked off three passes, broke up a pass and forced a fumble...His other interceptions came against Greensboro and Ferrum...Broke up three passes in the Maryville contest.
2006 (Freshman) - Played in all 11 games with a total of 23 tackles...Had three solos and two assists against Rowan and the same number in the Maryville game...Added three solos and an assist in the NCAA playoff against Washington & Jefferson...Intercepted a pass versus Maryville, returning it 18 yards, and forced a fumble against Averett and recovered one in the Ferrum contest...Broke up three passes during the season, two of them in the NCAA playoff...Also had a key hit in the win over No. 5 Mary Hardin-Baylor.
AT KELLAM - Earned second team All-Beach District honors at defensive back and honorable mention at quarterback...Also honorable mention defensive back as junior...Was coach Chris DeWitt’s team captain for two years and MVP as a senior...Won an Academic Letter as a senior, getting straight A’s...Worked as a volunteer at the Strawberry Festival.
PERSONAL - Matthew Dallas Long was born July 22, 1987 in Woodbridge, N.J…He’s the son of Jeff and Kathy Long and is majoring in Political Science…His older brother, Justin, 25, was an all-conference football player at CNU and was an assistant coach…Also had another brother, the late Jeff Long.
