MECHANICSVILLE, Va. -- Headlining the action at the Spider Alumni Open,
Kayla Lopez posted a top-20 finish in a field packed with Division I competition while guiding the Christopher Newport cross country teams to an outstanding effort on the opening day of the 2026 campaign at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Virginia.
During the race, Lopez completed the 4k in 15:07.7, which marked the second-fastest clocking of her career. It also placed her 20th overall and first among Division III competitors.
Just a split second behind Lopez,
Sarah Dake came in 21st with a mark of 15:08.2. Remarkably, the senior Captains were the only two Division III runners to place in the top-40 at Saturday's race. The star-studded meet included entrants from nine Division I programs, including the nationally-ranked Georgetown Hoyas, who came into the weekend slotted 29th in the country.
Along with the headliners, CNU parked two other runners in the top-50 on Saturday.
Courtney Mudd finished 45th in 15:44.0, while
Katherine Streeter was up next in 15:44.6. With that clocking, Streeter cut 34 seconds off her previous 4k PR, which she established at last year's Spider Alumni Open.
Among other veteran performers,
Lena Blagg also set a new personal-best with a time of 15:55.8, which placed her 56th overall. Meanwhile,
Esther Paul paced the newcomers after finishing in 15:56.1, while
Sarah Bland rounded out the top-seven with a 16:20.4 mark.
Overall, the women posted a score of 173, which slotted them sixth in the team standings and first among Division III programs. The Captains beat four Division I squads and topped the second-best Division III team by an astounding 157 points.
The men also featured the meet's top Division III performer as
Clayton Rankin posted a time of 20:03.1 in the 6k. That beat the second-best D3 runner by 18 seconds. It also placed him 42nd overall.
Following Rankin, Christopher Newport showcased an impressive youth movement as five freshmen cracked the squad's top-seven. Leading the newcomers,
Stewart Williams came in 58th overall - and third among Division III performers - with a time of 20:40.8. Later,
Nate Wilson finished 69th (21:03.3),
Grant Kutz was 74th (21:24.5),
Louis Dobson came in 83rd (21:54.0), and
Tyler Brann placed 87th (22:04.4).
Meanwhile, among the other veterans, sophomore
Kaiden Brewer made his presence felt. The second-year speedster showed marked improvement from last year after crossing in 22:08.5. That slashed over 90 seconds off his effort from 2025 when he wrapped up his debut outing in 23:49.7.
Overall, the men's team placed eighth at Saturday's meet and ranked first among Division III squads with a score of 256.
Christopher Newport will return to action on September 18 when the Captains host the CNU Invitational at Lee Hall Mansion.
