NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Six Captains posted top-10 individual finishes as the Christopher Newport women's cross country squad captured the team title, while the men placed second at the CNU Invitational on Friday evening at Lee Hall Mansion.
Winning the competition for the second straight year, the women parked five runners in the top-10 while compiling a score of 32. That beat out second-place VCU, who accumulated 66 points. Meanwhile, Norfolk State (77), Hampton (79), and Virginia Union (117) rounded out the top-five.
The men also matched their performance from last year's meet after finishing as the runner-up for the second straight season. Overall, Christopher Newport amassed a score of 50, which fell just behind Virginia Union, who claimed the crown with 31 points. Hampton (58), Regent (93), and Elizabeth City State (138) completed the top-five.
Headlining Friday's action,
Sarah Dake finished second in the women's 6k after setting a new course-best with a time of 22:18.8. That shaved 21 seconds off her standard from last year. Meanwhile,
Kayla Lopez established a 6k PR after crossing the line in 22:30.96, which placed her fifth in the field. That clocking also vaulted her to 13th on the program's all-time performance list, cruising past CNU Hall of Famer Aimee Gibbs, who had a personal-best time of 22:31 at the 2003 Paul Short Run.
Along with the veterans,
Ella Rafat made her collegiate debut in the 6k and came in sixth overall after registering a mark of 23:38.6, which made her the 48th standout in school history to eclipse the 24-minute barrier. It also moved her to 43rd on the program's all-time charts.
Among other top-10 performers,
Sarah Bland was ninth in the field with a time of 24:02.6, while
Katherine Streeter came in 10th and set a new course-best after completing the race in 24:09.6 Later,
Esther Paul was 14th in 24:31.6, and
Alexis Rose threw down a PR while placing 15th in 24:40.3.
In addition to the squad's top-seven, several other veterans set new individual standards with their work on Friday.
Katelyn White sliced nearly a minute off her previous PR after clocking in at 25:10.0, while
Sydney Chipperfield added her own personal-best in 25:18.1.
On the men's side,
Clayton Rankin led the Captains in the 8k after crossing the line in 27:25.9. That placed him seventh in the field and first among Division III runners. Moments later,
Stewart Williams wrapped up the race in 28:15.4, which was the second-best mark among D3 competitors and the 11th-fastest time overall.
Three other Captains also notched top-20 finishes as
Grant Kutz placed 14th in 28:46.1,
Nate Wilson was up next in 28:52.4, and
Kevin Farnsworth came in 20th in 29:57.2. Rounding out the squad's top-seven,
Louis Dobson finished in 30:06.9, and
Myles Hendler-Voss capped off the group in 30:13.5.
Christopher Newport will return to action on October 2 when the Captains head to the prestigious Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
