NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Following one of the most decorated careers in school history, former CNU legend
Warner Cabaniss has returned to his alma mater and will serve as a volunteer assistant coach with the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse program as the Captains begin their preparations for the upcoming 2027 campaign.
Cabaniss joins a coaching staff featuring head coach Mikey Thompson along with fellow assistants Michael Brost and
Logan Shassian.
Solidifying his spot as one of the greatest faceoff specialists in NCAA history, Cabaniss starred for the Captains from 2022-25. During that four-year stretch, he established a new school record with 1,108 faceoff victories. That total also marked the fifth-highest in Division III lore and the ninth-most by any collegiate lacrosse player in the history of the sport.
Cabaniss also finished 14th in NCAA history with 700 ground balls, while his .650 faceoff percentage established a new program record as well.
Stockpiling awards for his performance, Cabaniss accumulated 10 total All-American certificates, which marked the highest total by a non-track & field athlete in Christopher Newport history. Along the way, he became the program's first four-time USILA and
USA Lacrosse Magazine honoree.Â
In addition to his national awards, the Richmond native was a four-time All-Conference, All-State, and All-Region selection as well.
Fittingly, Cabaniss' award-winning tenure coincided with one of the most successful eras in program history. During his time on the field, he helped the Captains compile a 71-15 record while making four straight appearances in the NCAA Quarterfinals, including a berth in the Final Four in 2023.
