Michael Brost Elevated to Assistant Head Coach of CNU Men's Lacrosse

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Entering his third year on the coaching staff with the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse program, Michael Brost has been elevated to the position of assistant head coach of the Captains ahead of the upcoming 2027 season.

A lifelong Captain, Brost spent five years playing for CNU before transitioning to the sidelines prior to the 2025 campaign. He is part of a staff led by head coach Mikey Thompson along with assistants Logan Shassian and Warner Cabaniss.

"I'm incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to take on the role of Assistant Head Coach," said Brost. "CNU Men's Lacrosse has been a tremendously important part of my life since 2019, and I cannot wait to continue in service of this program and all of its pursuits on and off the field."

Since joining the coaching staff, Brost has helped Christopher Newport enhance its profile on the national stage. Over the past two years, the Captains have made a pair of trips to the NCAA Quarterfinals while posting a 36-8 record. Along the way, the team has been slotted in the top-6 of the USILA National Coaches Poll in all 28 releases since the start of the 2025 campaign.

For his efforts, he was celebrated alongside the rest of the coaches as the 2026 Coastal Lacrosse Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.

On an individual level, Brost has served as the team's faceoff coach while also running the substitution box during games. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, he has assisted with the scout teams, helped recruit and evaluate incoming freshmen, and aided in the day-to-day operations of the program including academic meetings, travel planning, and oversight of the team service board.

In addition to his work with the Captains, Brost has served as the faceoff and goalies coach on the Puerto Rico men's national lacrosse team. Among his highlights on the international level, he helped the squad place fifth at the 2026 Pan-American Men's Lacrosse Championship in Kingston, Jamaica.

Prior to his time on the sidelines, Brost excelled as a player at Christopher Newport from 2020-24. During that stretch, he was a two-year team captain while leading the program to a 71-18 record, including four consecutive NCAA Tournament berths and a pair of Final Four appearances in 2021 and 2023.

At the time of his graduation, he ranked sixth in school history with a .513 career faceoff percentage. He also chipped in with 90 ground balls and produced five points, including a fourth-quarter goal against No. 1 Salisbury on April 6, 2024.

Along with his work on the field, Brost was a five-time Academic All-Conference selection and a member of the 2024 CoSIDA Academic All-District team as a communications and economics major.

"Michael Brost is beyond deserving of this promotion," said Thompson, who is beginning his 12th year at the helm of the Captains. "He has put eight years of blood, sweat, and tears into this program, and he is fully prepared to step up into this role of Assistant Head Coach. He will continue to serve as a great mentor for our guys and a leader of our program."
