FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Headlined by
Ellie Nuckols and
Seth Morris, the Christopher Newport track & field teams stockpiled awards while wrapping up a remarkable two-day stretch at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, which concluded on Saturday evening at Mary Washington's Battleground Athletic Complex.
Nuckols was recognized as the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet for the second straight year, becoming the first standout in league history to earn the honor twice. Meanwhile, after sweeping the shot put and hammer on Friday, Morris made his own history while being named the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet.
Coupled with his performance over the winter, the junior star became the first competitor in conference history to receive that award during both the indoor and outdoor championships in the same year. He was also celebrated as the Field Athlete of the Meet at the winter competition after winning the shot put and weight throw.
Aided by the work of the squad's decorated duo, CNU eventually registered a pair of second-place efforts in the final team standings. The women concluded the weekend with 180 points, which only trailed UC Santa Cruz, who posted a score of 203. On the men's side, the Captains finished with 172 points, while Salisbury took the title with 250.
Leading the way on Saturday, Nuckols established a new championship meet standard in the 400-hurdles. During the race, she paced the field with a time of 1:02.81. That bested her own meet record of 1:03.50, which she notched last spring.
In addition to her victory, Nuckols also added a pair of second-place marks. Setting PRs in both events, the third-year speedster was the runner-up in the 400 (57.86) and 100-hurdles (14.44). Her performance in the latter event also marked the fifth-fastest clocking in school history.
Along with her solo endeavors, Nuckols ran on a pair of relays as well. In the 4x100, she teamed up with
Danielle Hollington,
Bailey Billger, and
Annaka Busenlehner on a third-place mark after finishing in 48.56. Later, she joined Hollington,
Lana Sakhel, and
Courtney Mudd on an identical third-place showing in the 4x400 (4:09.28).
Overall, Nuckols accumulated 29 total points in track events during the competition, which was the most by any athlete at the title meet.
Christopher Newport walked away with four other individual titles on Saturday. Freshman
Kayla Asprey captured the women's discus with a 40.04-meter launch, marking the fifth-longest toss in school history. In other throwing events,
Dylan Filipowicz finished first in the men's javelin with a 56.53-meter laser.
Rounding out the winners, CNU swept the triple jump titles.
Leo Brennan won the men's event with a 14.06-meter leap. Meanwhile, on the women's side,
Ashley Eley set a new personal-standard with a 11.70-meter distance. That moved her to seventh on the school's all-time performance list and marked the top effort by a Captain since CNU Hall of Famer LaNeatra Johnson set the program record with a 12.70-meter jump at the 2003 NCAA Championships.
Continuing her award-winning appearance, Eley also earned All-League accolades in the high jump after finishing second with a 1.57-meter clearance. Capping off a busy day, she came in sixth in both the javelin (26.16 meters) and 100-hurdles (15.60) as well.
Fittingly, Eley led all field athletes with 27 points during the competition, just edging out Asprey, who had 26.
Among other award-winners,
Charlotte Waldemar was second in the women's discus after setting a new personal-best with a 35.06-meter heave. Meanwhile, on the men's side,
Bradley Stine was the runner-up in the discus (45.47 meters), and
Charlie Anania finished just behind Filipowicz in the javelin (51.97 meters). With that throw, Anania also moved to sixth on the school's all-time charts.
On the track,
Sarah Bland made some history in the 1500. The sophomore came in fourth in 4:46.58, which was the ninth-fastest clocking in program lore and the top mark by a Captain in four years.
In other distance races,
Sarah Dake was third in the 5000 (18:17.69), and
Alexis Rose was sixth in the 800 (2:25.69). Additionally, along with their relay work, Busenlehner finished fourth in the 100 (12.47), and Hollington came in fifth in the 200 (26.40).
In the men's sprints,
Marshall Mattison placed fifth in the 100 (11.05) and seventh in the 200 (22.13), while
Eli Wilson was sixth in the 400 (49.58). The two stars also made their mark on CNU's top relay units. Mattison joined
Jahi Jemison,
John Laser, and
Miles Allen on a third-place finish in the 4x100 (45.52). Meanwhile, Wilson ran with Allen,
Luca Hinton, and
Tyler Obaugh in the 4x400. Together, the foursome placed third in 3:22.27.
Along with his performance on the relay, Jemison was fourth in both the 110-hurdles (15.55) and high jump (1.74 meters). Equally busy,
Evan Young was third in the 5000 (15:07.80) and fourth in the 1500 (3:58.05).
Rounding out the top performers for the men,
Kendrick Matheny placed fifth in the 400-hurdles (57.85), and
Kevin Farnsworth was seventh in the 800 (1:56.45).
With the conference meet behind them, the Captains will now set their sights on the NCAA Championships, which will take place in La Crosse, Wisconsin beginning on May 21. Kicking off the postseason push, CNU will return to action with the Widener Final Qualifier on May 11.
