PITMAN, N.J. -- For the second time this season,
Jamie Smith was named the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week after the senior standout guided the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team to a pair of victories last week.
Along with his most recent honor, Smith was also recognized by the league on February 16.
During his two outings last week, Smith led the Captains with 11 points, including nine goals. He also had four man-up strikes while finishing his two-game showcase with an efficient .500 shooting percentage.
Kicking off his award-winning work, the fourth-year phenom erupted for seven points, including five goals, during a 21-7 win at Mary Washington on Wednesday. Remarkably, all five of his goals came in the first half as the Captains jumped out to a commanding 10-3 lead at the break. Over the final 30 minutes, he stepped up as a facilitator while matching his career-high with two assists.
Just three days later, Smith continued his assault with four more goals during a 19-6 triumph at Kean. Once again, he got the action started early with another first-half hat-trick before adding his final blow in the fourth quarter.
Anchoring the squad's extra-man unit, he produced a pair of man-up goals in both contests. With that performance, he became just the third Captain in school history to record two man-up tallies in back-to-back games. In that club, he joined former legends Alex Barber (2015) and Will Geise (2017).
One of the country's most prolific scorers, Smith currently leads the entire NCAA with 67 goals this season. He is also tied for third on the national charts with 78 points.
A reigning All-American, Smith boasts a remarkable 3.59 goals-per-game mark during his time at CNU. That not only stands as the top rate in program history, but it also ranks 10th among all active players in the NCAA. Overall, he currently sits fifth in school lore with 158 career goals and 11th with 175 points.
Smith and the rest of the Captains will return to action on Wednesday when Christopher Newport hosts Roanoke at 4 p.m.
