FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Anchoring a well-balanced attack,
Ryan Miller established a new freshman assists record, while
Jamie Smith chipped in with seven points, including five goals, as the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team rolled past Mary Washington, 21-7, during a Coastal Lacrosse Conference clash on Wednesday evening at the Battleground Turf Field.
Against the Eagles, Miller posted two goals and three assists. His final helper of the contest was his 30th of the season. That moved him past former legend Jackson Deal for the most by a first-year competitor in program history. Deal had 29 assists during his debut campaign in 2018.
Meanwhile,
Kevin Miller notched his 50th assist of the season, becoming the first player in school lore to hit that mark twice. In addition to the historic facilitators, Smith eclipsed 60 goals for the second straight season, joining former All-Americans
Brett Jackson and Andrew Cook as the only players to accomplish that twice.
Equally lethal from the midfield unit,
Jude MacLean and
Randolph Campbell both chipped in with three points against Mary Washington. Additionally,
Will Cramp added a pair while starring in transition.
On the back end,
Colin DeGrassi had two takeaways,
Jed Pellicano came through with a sensational shorthanded strip, and
Mason Bellinger finished the contest with eight saves in 48 minutes of action.
Mark Davison also had a caused turnover, two ground balls, and his first goal of the season.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improved to 12-2 on the season, including 2-0 in league action. Meanwhile, the setback dropped Mary Washington to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
In the opening period, the two teams traded the game's first four goals. For the Captains, MacLean converted an early equalizer on a slick pick-and-roll. After setting a screen for
Ryan Miller at the top of the zone, he slipped into the right alley, secured a feed, and snapped off a screamer from deep.
After the Eagles responded, Christopher Newport fired right back. In the 12th minute, CNU capitalized on a man-up situation as
Kevin Miller found Smith, who ripped a one-timer on the interior to knot the score at two.
Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Bellinger put on a show in the crease. Early on, he snagged a tough bouncer from long range before pocketing a low liner on the next series. Later, he added a sensational shorthanded stop during a one-on-one showdown with an attacker in the right alley, which kept the score tied at two entering the second quarter.
With a fresh 15 minutes on the clock, the visitors found their rhythm on the offensive end. Early on,
Fred Fulkerson broke the deadlock with a remarkable run. After winning a scramble for a loose ball in the left wing against two Eagles, he curled behind the crease, burst around the right post, absorbed contact, and drained a jumper from close range.
Continuing the offensive assault,
Kevin Miller faked a shot from long range before dunking on the doorstep. Then, MacLean broke out a behind-the-back feed to Smith, who buried a rocket into the top right corner of the cage. Later, Smith completed his early hat-trick after sinking a turnaround tracer along the opposite post.
After Mary Washington ended its drought with a goal in the 22nd minute, Christopher Newport stymied the opposition with another four-goal rally.
Kicking off the second surge,
Jackson Platner flashed his skill set. The sophomore star lowered his shoulder and put a defender on skates at the top of the zone. After showing off his strength, he spun to his right, split two more Eagles, and uncorked a missile on the move for the squad's seventh goal.
After Smith came back with a sidewinder from the right side, the Captains killed the Eagles in transition. Working quickly after a pair of defensive stands, the Miller brothers joined forces on the ninth tally before
Armer Harrison helped set up a fast-break opportunity for Smith, which capped off the first-half scoring.
Just as effective on the defensive side, Cramp and Davison killed off back-to-back clear attempts early in the second quarter. Later, during a lengthy push by the hosts, Davison prevented a quick shot in transition with a fast closeout near the right post. Shortly thereafter,
Daniel Siaton tripped up a sprinter down the right alley before Bellinger made a sprawling save from his knees.
On Mary Washington's next venture down the field, the Eagles tested Bellinger with some high heat, but the fourth-year All-American made a leaping stop to cut off the rally before
Brett Kelley came up with the loose ball to prevent a second-chance opportunity.
Staring at a 10-3 deficit entering halftime, UMW found new life in the third period. Although
Will Cramp kicked off the quarter with a transition tally off a strip by DeGrassi, the hosts fired back. Scoring twice in less than two minutes, Mary Washington quickly pulled back within six early in the stanza.
Searching for a response, Christopher Newport regained its momentum on the offensive end. MacLean ran a slick give-and-go with
Levi Wentz before driving home his second strike of the contest. Moments later, on a failed clear by the Eagles, Smith connected with
Kevin Miller, who scored from close range to regain an eight-goal cushion at 13-5.
Then, in the middle of the stanza, the defense came up with the biggest play of the period. After the Captains were hit with a pair of penalties, the squad faced a 4-on-6 shorthanded situation. Unwavering on the back end, CNU blanketed the field before Pellicano deflected a pass and sent the ball spinning to
Rory Keverline, who corralled the roller and cleared the defensive side.
Following the shorthanded strip, the attack went back to work.
Ryan Miller retaliated with a pair of goals, including a fake-and-finish on the doorstep. Later, just before the clock ran out on the third quarter, Bellinger walled off a bounce shot before DeGrassi secured the rebound. With only seconds left, the senior defenseman launched a looping rainbow down the field to kick off a fast-break opportunity.
Eventually, Davison tracked down the ball and nuked a blast into the back of the cage just before the horn sounded.
With a double-digit lead entering the fourth quarter, Christopher Newport eased into the victory.
Garrett Talkington kicked off the final frame with a rip from the right side. Later, in transition, Cramp found
Brady Mitchell, who buzzed a bullet past the earhole of the keeper, which gave the visitors an 18-7 edge.
With little left to prove,
Ryan Traynor landed a seed from the inside before
Luke Solomon and
Jack Herron capped off the festivities with back-to-back bouncers.
Overall, CNU held a 60-32 advantage in shots and a 40-25 edge in ground balls. The Captains also won 18 of the game's 30 faceoffs, including a 9-for-13 performance by
Grant Giunchi. In addition to his nine faceoff wins, Giunchi hauled in six ground balls, while DeGrassi, Kelley, and
Zach Ward had four apiece.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday with a noon trip to Kean.
