BOSTON, Mass. -- Christopher Newport senior midfielder
Michael Hackworth was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon after helping lift the Captains to a pair of wins. Hackworth scored a goal and added an assist in the win against Batten before helping secure a 2-1 against Marymount in a 2-0 week for CNU men's soccer.
The senior from Yorktown, Va. posted his third 3-point performance of the season with a goal and an assist against Batten University. He opened the scoring in the 58th minute when he finished on the back post off a header flick by
Riley Usher. The original pass came across the center from
Tim McGuire and Hackworth was positioned well for the finish.
Adding a pivotal insurance goal in the 82nd minute, Hackworth did the yeoman's share of the work in setting up
Yazan Yaghmmour for an electric score. The senior dribbled to the goal line and then showed off some nifty footwork as he turned and sprinted back toward the top of the box. With one defender in front of him, he made a move to clear space and found Yaghmmour open in stride on the left side. His classmate blazed an unforgettable liner into the left side for the score, which would hold up as the winner after Batten scored just minutes later.
Playing against Marymount on a dreary, drizzly evening at Captains Field, the Captains' midfielder helped organize a number of offensive opportunities in the game. Both teams were limited in chances, but Hackworth added a shot on goal while frustrating Saints defenders with the ball at his feet throughout the contest. He averaged 62.5 minutes per game this week including a season-high 64 minutes played against Batten.
Hackworth is the third CNU player to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors this season, joining Usher and Yaghmmour.
The Captains will return to action on Wednesday, October 5 as they travel to No. 8 Washington and Lee University for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff against the Generals.
