Christopher Newport Men's Soccer Takes Down Marymount Saints to Stay Unbeaten at Home, 2-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Despite facing an early deficit, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team rattled off two more goals to extend it's home unbeaten streak to 10 on a drizzly, mild night at Captains Field on Saturday. The Captains (6-1-1) defeated Marymount University (4-6-1) in come-from-behind fashion with Manzi Siibo and Drew McWhinney catapulting the squad to the victory with scores.

Christopher Newport trailed for just the third time this season when Marymount opened up a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of play. Michah Vogler took advantage of an opportunity in the box and ripped a hard shot into the right side.

The Captains, however, rallied right back for a game-tying goal in the 33rd minute. In a play that appeared destined for a CNU score from three or four different opportunities, Ryan Buckon ripped a close-range missile off the hands of the goalkeeper and collected the rebound on the right side. In a flash, he centered a pass to Siibo on the back post for the wide open net and the senior did not miss, equalizing for the Captains.

It was Siibo's second goal of the season and kickstarted a dominant stretch of offense for the Captains. CNU outshot the Saints, 6-2, in the final 15 minutes of the first half including an attempt on frame by Caleb Lewis and a header off a corner kick by Declan Karney that whistled just wide.

The advantage continued early in the second half as CNU took four of the first five shots after halftime. The first would come in the 49th minute on a beautiful combination play by the center of the Captains' attack. Riley Usher, with his back to the goal, played a short pass to Diego Torres near midfield. Torres took one touch and laid in a perfec through ball to the sprinting Drew McWhinney near the top of the box. Without a defender between he and the ball, McWhinney lined up the shot and hammered home the line drive goal from the top of the box.

McWhinney's third goal of the year was his first gamewinner and CNU has now featured six different game-winning goal scorers this season. As a team, the Captains' offense continues to hum with all six wins featuring multiple goals scored in 2026.

CNU will be back in action on Wednesday, October 7 when they travel to nationally-ranked Washington and Lee University for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
