NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 3 as the Captains (12-3) will host Stockton University (6-4) at the Freeman Center. Tip against the Ospreys is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. after Stockton opens a Southern swing with a matchup at Virginia Wesleyan on Friday.
The Captains, ranked No. 14 in the WBCA Division III Coaches' Poll and receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25, are coming off just the fifth regular season loss since December 30, 2019 after dropping a 72-53 decision to 18th-ranked WashU on December 30 in the St. Pete Classic. Looking to bounce back, Christopher Newport returns home where the Captains have won 15 consecutive games, tying the fourth longest home winning streak in program history. CNU is 280-39 all-time at the Freeman Center for a winning percentage of 87.8 percent including a dominant 69-1 (.986) over the last 70 games at home.
It will be the first ever matchup between Christopher Newport and Stockton University. The Captains are 10-4 all-time against teams currently competing as members of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. In the game against WashU, senior
McKenna Snively led the team in scoring with 15 points and became the seventh different player to lead the Captains in scoring during a game this season. It was her highest scoring performance since dropping in 19 against Cheyney as a sophomore on January 5, 2024. Since returning to action for the last five games after an injury held her out of the first ten, Snively has imbued the offense with a spark of over nine points per game. She ranks second among the active players with 9.4 points per game while knocking down a team-high 50 percent from the field.
Leading the offense has been sophomore
Madison McKenzie with 11.4 points per game and the second-year has also been at the head of the dominant defense. McKenzie has snagged 29 steals this season, leading the team, while junior
Caitlin Crump ranks second on the team with 28 thefts. Crump also is adding 7.5 points per game as one of three players to start all 15 games this year alongside
Elizabeth Creed (7.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and
Hailey Kellogg (5.2 ppg, 3.1 apg).
Stockton will counter the Captains with a balanced offense that is averaging 57.5 points per game. Defensively, the Ospreys are holding foes to under 57 points per game, ranking among the top-100 defensive teams in Division III. Bre Evans leads the offense with 9.8 points per game while Zemirah Enalls is close behind with 9.4 points per game. Enalls leads the Ospreys on the glass with 7.1 rebounds per game.
Following the home game on Saturday, Christopher Newport will travel to Misenheimer, North Carolina on Thursday, January 8 for a matchup at Pfeiffer University to close out the winter break schedule. Starting on Sunday, January 11, the second semester will begin and CNU will host five of the next seven games at home.
