Eight Captains Receive Softball All-State Recognition from Virginia Sports Information Directors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Eight members of the Christopher Newport University softball team were honored on Wednesday as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its annual All-State teams. Four Captains achieved first team status, and four more were voted second team.

Seniors Jamie Martin and Brooke Greaver as well as sophomore Candace Slaw and freshman Cora Thomas received first team nods. Seniors Kate Alger, Kendall Bentley, Sammy Drew, and Brenna Morefield were named second team.

Keith Parr's squad finished the season ranked tenth in the country, and registered a record of 37-6. The Captains advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 18th straight time, falling to Randolph-Macon in the Regional at Captains Park.

Martin,a lefthander from Lorton, Va., was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Pitcher of the Year for the second straight year. She was honored as a second team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and was also named third team Academic All-America by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). Slaw, CNU's centerfielder and leadoff hitter, was chosen first team All-America by the NFCA after setting new program single-season records with 77 hits, and 64 runs scored. Slaw, from Warsaw, Va., also set a new CNU single season high mark for batting average, going 77 for 149 at the plate this year for a .517 batting average.

Greaver, from Abingdon, Md., was voted the Player of the Year in the C2C for the second time in her career, hitting .405 with 13 home runs and 60 runs batted in. Greaver was named first team All-Region by the NFCA in Region 6, and finished her career second in doubles (41), third in slugging percentage (.755), and fourth on CNU's all-time home run (39) and runs batted in (169) lists. Thomas was voted the Rookie of the Year in the C2C this spring after a solid first season in a Captains uniform. Thomas, from Fairfield, Vt., posted a batting average of .400 and topped the conference in stolen bases this year with 27 in 33 attempts.

Alger, from Staunton, Va., was selected second team All-Region by the NFCA. She became the first CNU pitcher to ever surpass the 500-strikeout mark for her career, and finished the season with a 17-2 record and an ERA of 1.36. Bentley, CNU's shortstop from Manassas, Va., registered a .292 batting average this season and hit two home runs and drove in 23 runs while providing solid defensive play at shortstop. Drew, the cleanup hitter and leftfielder for the Captains, clubbed nine home runs and drove in 43 runs on the year. The Virginia Beach native recorded an average of .379 with 11 doubles and 11 stolen bases. Morefield, CNU's rightfielder from Fredericksburg, Va., was chosen third team All-Region this year by the NFCA. She posted a batting average of .398 and stole 14 bases in 15 attempts for the Captains.
