CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Heading into the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles National Championships this weekend, a pair of Christopher Newport Captains are set to compete against some of the best players in the country. Draws were released on Friday evening with senior
Raine Weis set to open the singles bracket at 9:00 a.m. and then returning to action not before 3:00 p.m. with sophomore playing partner
Kylie Schaefer for doubles action.
The event is hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center and admission is free of charge. Live scoring and a live video stream will be available for all the action and links to both can be found at the top of this page as well as on the women's tennis schedule at CNUsports.com.
In the morning matchup in singles play, Weis had been matched up against 10th-ranked Fiona Lee from MIT. The Engineers rookie is playing under two hours from home as she hails from Ladera Ranch, California not far from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. After a standout first year, Lee is 19-4 heading into the matchup against Christopher Newport's senior from Ashland, Va. It will be played on Court 5 at the Biszantz Center, starting at 9:00 a.m.
Weis is a three-time Conference Player of the Year in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference and has been nationally-ranked all season long. She is currently 18-4 during individual play this season including a 15-2 record at No. 1. She is ranked No. 19 in the most recent ITA National Singles Rankings and has been as high as No. 14 this season.
The winner between Weis and Lee will advance to take on either No. 5 Sahana Raman (Middlebury) or No. 15 Jimena Menendez in the second round on Sunday, May 25.
After her singles match, Weis will partner up with
Kylie Schaefer as the 17th-ranked doubles tandem in the nation heading into the championship. The CNU pairing will face No. 24 Lily McCloskey and Katalina Wang from Case Western Reserve. It will be a rematch of a regular season bout between the two duos on March 21; Schaefer and Weis won that round by a 7-6 (8-6) margin.
That matchup was part of a run that saw the CNU teammates win 10 of their last 11 matches during the season. Overall, the Captains went 15-4 together and were ranked as high as No. 7 in the nation on April 23. McCloskey and Wang were ranked as high as No. 10 this season in their first year as a pair. The Spartans senior, McCloskey, is a three-time All-American in doubles while Wang, a junior, helped the pairing go 17-5 together this season including 12 wins at No. 1.
This year, Weis and Schaefer were named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Doubles Team of the Year as Weis repeated as the major award winner.
The doubles match will begin no earlier than 3:00 p.m. and the winning tandem will advance to face either Pomona-Pitzer's fourth-seeded and fifth-ranked Marissa Markey/Angie Zhou or the Brandeis pairing of Bhakti Parwan/Rebecca Suarez. The quarterfinals will be played not before 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 25.
Weis, the most decorated player in program history, is making her third career appearance in the individual championships. She is the only player to accomplish that feat after matching Johanna Ranta-aho last year.
