#2 Seed Christopher Newport Women's Tennis Advances to Championship With 4-0 Win Over #3 UC Santa Cruz

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Veteran Kylie Schaefer clinched the win at No. 1 singles and also earned a dominant win at No. 1 doubles to help lift the 40th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team back into the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship. The Captains earned a 4-0 win over No. 46 UC Santa Cruz in the C2C Semifinals on Saturday and will compete for the conference title for the 11th consecutive season. 

Christopher Newport, the two-time defending champions of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, will face top-seed and host Mary Washington at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 3. 

Playing at the Hegmann Family Tennis Courts at the University Tennis Center at the Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Captains cruised to a 1-0 lead after doubles and then slammed the door on the Banana Slugs with three wins in singles action. 

In addition to Schaefer's two-win day, the Captains also got multiple wins from Emma Carver at No. 3 doubles and NO. 5 singles. 

In doubles, Schaefer paired with Kendal Chang as the 21st-ranked doubles tandem in the nation made quick work of the regionally-ranked pairing of Chloe Wu and Lucy Yung for UC Santa Cruz. The CNU pair won the match at No. 1 doubles, 6-1. CNU secured the point with the win at No. 3 doubles where Carver paired upw ith senior Eva Taylor for a 6-3 win against Veronica Miller and Emily Belezzuoli. 

In singles action, it was Lindsey Bergelin who got CNU another team point first, winning her match over Miller at No. 6 with just one game surrendered. Bergelin dominated for a 6-1, 6-0 win. Carver's win came next, dropping just two games in the straight-set victory over Belezzuoli for a 6-0, 6-2 win. 

The clinching point came from Schaefer at No. 1 against Chloe Wu. Schaefer finished off her opponent, 6-4, 6-1, and lifted CNU into the title match.
