ATLANTA, Ga. -- Wrapping up a three-match weekend against nationally-ranked competition, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback at No. 11 Emory University (11-5) on Sunday afternoon. The Captains dropped to 6-11 overall this season following the loss.
In doubles play, the Captains scored multiple game victories on all three lines, but were unable to pull out a win. At No. 3,
Emma Carver and
Eva Taylor were defeated by a slim 6-4 margin against Daniela Livson and Holyn Karp. The top tandem for CNU,
Kendal Chang and
Kylie Schaefer, won three games in their loss and
Lindsey Bergelin and
Samantha Robertson snagged a pair in the setback at No. 2.
Moving into singles play trailing the host Eagles, 1-0, the Captains faced the highly-ranked foe on their home courts at the Woodruff PE Center. Bergelin won four games over two sets at No. 6 against Audrey Pogue and Chang picked up three game victories over two sets at No. 2 against Iris Berman (ranked No. 49 nationally).
The best showing of the day came on the top line behind junior
Kylie Schaefer as she took on 15th-ranked Emily Kantrovitz. Schaefer dropped the first set, 6-3, but battled back mightily in the second and forced a seventh game in the second set against one of the nation's top players. She ultimately fell, 6-3, 7-5, but challenged against Kantrovitz in the match.
Carver faced her first nationally-ranked opponent in her career when she took on #43 Holyn Karp at No. 5.
Eva Taylor also faced #6 Izzy Antanavicius at No. 3 for the Captains.
CNU will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 25 against Salisbury University. Senior Day is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
