Alex Delgado Fires Career-Best Even Par 71 to Close No. 22 CNU Women's Golf Trip to Arizona

PEORIA, Ariz. -- With three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the back nine, Christopher Newport senior Alex Delgado set herself up to finish with a career-low scoring performance in the second round of the Westbrook Village Invitational. Delgado fired an Even par 71 to become just the fifth player in program history to record a round at par or better and also set the CNU Women's Golf record for a single round low on a Par 71 course.

The 22nd-ranked women's golf program according to the WGCA Coaches' Poll to start the spring season, Christopher Newport finished ninth among one of the most challenging tournament fields in the nation. CNU was one of nine teams entered into the event ranked in the Scoreboard National Rankings Top 25 with a tenth checking in at No. 41.

CNU finished the tournament at 51-over par with a 619 (316-303). Delgado had the finest individual performance by moving up to 28th with a 10-over par 152 (81-71).

In Sunday's second round, Delgado joined Erica Whitehouse, Shreya Ganta, Lauren Sims, and Maddie Stokes with the 12th round of par or better in program history. The 71 is tied for the second best score overall, bested only by Whitehouse's 70 in the Bridgewater Invitational on September 22, 2018. Delgado's even par round broke the program record for a Par 71 track by one stroke, last set by Sims at the Williams Championship on September 24, 2022.

She started on the 10th hole and was at one-over through three before getting on a terrific run. With a birdie on the 333-yard par four 14th, she kicked off a spurt of three in four holes with another on the 337-yard par four 16th and the 140-yard par three 17th. She made the turn to the front nine in 33 strokes and then added seven more pars to close out the round with a 71 (33-38).

She shaved three strokes off of her personal record low of 74 recorded earlier this year at the Lynn Schweizer Invitational.

In addition to the historic performance by Delgado, the Captains saw several players improve their score in the second round including starters Katie Watson, Ayla Browning and Hannah Willman. Watson finished in 34th place with a 13-over 155 (80-75) with 12 pars in her second round. She added a birdie on the 324-yard par four 6th hole. Browning also tied for 34th at 13-over with a 155 (79-76), trimming three strokes off her opening round score. She scored nine pars and had two birdies in the round with a four on the 6th and 16th holes.

Continuing the strong start to her spring season, Hannah Willman fired a second-straight sub-170 tournament with a 166 (85-81). She notched two birdies and made the turn in 39 strokes after dropping under par on the 348-yard par four 15th and the 485-yard par five 18th.

Playing as individuals, Julia Pelletier and Taylor Davis finished strong with top-50 performnaces. Pelletier scored a six-over 77 for a career low and led the team with four birdies on Sunday. She had two on the front and two more on the back nine and finished 46th on the individual leaderboard with a 16-over 158 (81-77). Davis finished with a 17-over 159 (80-79) and had a string of eight straights pars in the second round.

Finally, Elena Rezac signed for a 13-over 84 on day two and Maggie Umphlet shaved 12 strokes off her first round score with an 18-over 89. Umphlet had seven pars and Rezac added eight.

Christopher Newport will return to the East Coast for their next tournament on March 31-April 1 at the Stith Invitational hosted in Richmond, Va.
