NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the third week in a row to start the Spring season, a Christopher Newport men's tennis player has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week certificate as junior
Ryan Monroe hauled in his first career selection on Monday.
As the nationally-ranked Captains split a pair of matches at the Duchossois Tennis Center in Lexington, Va., Monroe did his part with a pair of thrilling singles wins at No. 2. Against No. 27 Washington and Lee on Saturday, the Captains suffered a narrow 4-3 setback before rallying to earn a hard-fought 4-3 win against No. 15 Sewanee on Sunday.
Monroe played at No. 2 in both matches and remained unbeaten in singles play this year, improving to 10-0. He defeated James Kurani (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) against the host Generals and then went on to capture a victory against Gil Weston from Sewanee (2-6, 6-4, 6-3).
This Spring, Monroe has played at No. 2 in four matches and No. 3 in one; he has gone 5-0 in those duals after an impressive 5-0 start through the Fall season that included three wins over Division I competition.
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and
Vincent Truong have each been named C2C Player of the Week this season as Christopher Newport has captured each of the first three selections from the league office.
The 29th-ranked Captains will return to action in California next week as Christopher Newport embarks on its annual Spring Break trip to the West Coast. CNU will take on 25th-ranked Pomona Pitzer on Sunday, March 2 before facing No. 32 Chapman on March 4 and No. 19 Redlands on March 6.
