No. 27 CNU Men's Tennis Rolls Past No. 63 Virginia Wesleyan, 6-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Playing on a beautiful Spring morning at the Eyre Courts in Newport News, the 27th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team sailed to a 6-1 win over No. 63 Virginia Wesleyan (9-7) on Saturday. The Captains swept three doubles matches before capturing wins in five of the six singles bouts. 

Earning wins in both singles and doubles on Saturday were Nathan Russell, Barrett Foster, Gabe Smith, and Rainer Christiansen

In doubles action, Foster and Vincent Truong rolled to a win at No. 1 against Jed Platts and Ayaan Choudhary, 6-2. The Captains then clinched the team point with a 6-1 win at No. 2 behind Sam Halvorsen and Smith. The CNU tandem took down Hovo Madanyan and Alen Curovic. 

With the doubles point in hand, the Captains finished out the sweep with a thrilling matchup at No. 3. Christiansen and Russell paired up to take down Frieso ter Schiphorst and Veikko Sivonen from Mary Washington, 7-6 (10-8). 

Moving into singles play, the Captains quickly clinched the team victory with wins at 5, 6 and 2. Christiansen cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Timothy Gitomirski at No. 5; Ivan Ceric took down his foe at No. 6, Olaf Van der Stam, in a 6-2, 6-2 final, and; Russell clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Sebastien Muller at No. 2. 

Rounding out the wins for CNU were Foster over Josh Buckland (6-1, 6-1) at No. 3 and Smith against Natan Aerts (1-6, 6-1, 6-2) at No. 4. 

CNU will return to action on Saturday, April 18 at Swarthmore College. The Captains will take on the 12th-ranked Garnet at 11:00 a.m.
