SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team traveled to Swarthmore College (16-6) to take on the seventh-ranked Garnet on a steamy Saturday afternoon. The Captains fell, 6-1, in the match and dropped their overall season record to 9-6.
Rookie
Ivan Ceric earned the lone team point for the Captains with a win at No. 6 singles. Ceric took on Dylan Hayes Gilbert and earned a 7-6, 6-3 victory to avoid the shutout. Ceric improved to 4-2 this season at No. 6 and won his second match in a row.
Elsewhere in the match, the Captains got a valiant effort from
Nathan Russell at No. 2, taking on a nationally-ranked opponents in Max Lindstrom. Lindstrom, ranked No. 25, pulled out a 6-0, 7-6 win.
Rainer Christiansen earned a second set victory against Andres Fente at No. 5 singles before ultimately falling, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
The Captains will look to bounce back on Sunday with a match at nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins. With inclement weather in the forescast the match time may be adjusted by the Blue Jays.
