NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport freshman
Nathan Russell (Jacksonville, Fla.) was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after leading the Captains against a pair of top-ten opponents on the road.
Russell joins
Barrett Foster as the only other CNU player to garner C2C Player of the Week recognition for men's tennis.
The Captains traveled to face No. 7 Swarthmore College and No. 8 Johns Hopkins University this week and suffered a pair of team losses, but Russell was a bright light with two of the four team points earned. First, against the seventh-ranked Garnet, Russell appeared against one of the top singles players in the nation as he took on 25th-ranked Max Lindstrom at No. 2 singles. He surrendered the loss but battled in the second set before falling 0-6, 6-7.
On Sunday, Russell played at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 singles against the 8th-ranked Blue Jays. The rookie paired up with
Rainer Christiansen for a 6-3 win against Dylan Blenkiron and Brian Yi in pairs play, helping CNU secure the doubles point. In singles action, Russell took on regionally-ranked Chakor Rajendra and earned a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 2 singles.
For the season, Russell ranks second on the team in singles victories with 12 including six on the top two lines this Spring. In doubles, Russell has 13 wins with three different partners including an impressive 11-4 mark with Christiansen that includes nine wins at No. 3.
Christopher Newport will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 25 against Randolph College and Salisbury University.
