FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will put a 15-game winning streak on the line Saturday as the Captains (22-1) travel to face the University of Mary Washington. Tip from the Anderson Center will be at 1:00 p.m. in the final home regular season game of the year for the Eagles (9-14).
Christopher Newport has the eighth longest active winning streak in Division III and the run includes the first matchup against Mary Washington earlier this year. Despite trailing the Eagles at home by as many as eight points, the Captains pulled away for a 73-49 victory behind a dominant second quarter effort. CNU captured the 14th straight win against the Eagles and improved to 44-21 all-time against Mary Washington.
For fans unable to attend the game in person, a live video webcast and live stats will be available courtesy of the Mary Washington athletics department. Links to both can be found on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.
The Captains are heading on the road for just the third time since the calendar flipped to 2025 but Christopher Newport is no stranger to success in hostile environments. The senior class has combined for an unconscionable 39-1 road record over the last four years as part of a larger run that extends back to the start of the 2019-20 season. Since December 1, 2019, the Captains have lost just one game in 48 chances as the visiting team.
In the first game against Mary Washington earlier this season, junior
McKenna Snively led the team with 14 points including a pair of three-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 appearance at the free-throw line. Fifth-year senior point guard
Gabbi San Diego added 11 points while
Sydney Sherman, a Mary Washington transfer, led the rebounding battle with seven boards.
Heading into the Saturday afternoon tilt, Christopher Newport owns a top-five scoring offense in Division III and is the only team in the top-75 nationally without a single player averaging double figures. Balance has been key with nearly 47 points per game coming from the reserves, ranking second nationally, and a starting group that spreads the ball around better than just about anyone in the country. CNU ranks third nationally in assists per game, with over 19 per contest, while being led by
Hailey Kellogg (56) and San Diego (53) this year.
Mary Washington will look to stymie the fast-paced CNU attack as winners in two of their last three games. The Eagles defeated Marymount (50-39) and Shenandoah (56-49) since their loss to CNU and also dropped a decision at Salisbury (51-45). The team is led by veteran Megan Baxter with 8.2 points per game while adding nearly three assists per game. Juliona Mabie has added 7.5 points per game as well.
Following the Saturday matchup, the Captains will travel to Salisbury University to close out the regular season next week. Tip against the Sea Gulls on Thursday, February 20 is set for 6:00 p.m.
