CNU Women's Basketball Shifts in National Polls Ahead of Midweek Matchup at Marymount; Captains Face Saints Wednesday at 6 PM

Game Notes  ||  Live Video  ||  Live Stats

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Hitting the road for the first of just two road games in the month of January, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will head to Marymount University on Wednesday to take on the Saints at 6:00 p.m. Prior to the midweek matchup, the Captains moved up to No. 9 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 and slid back one spot to No. 7 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll.

The Captains improved to 14-1 and are riding a seven-game winning streak heading into the Wednesday tilt away from home. CNU is coming off a 71-64 win against Stevenson and an 83-45 victory versus Haverford last weekend that saw the Captains open up the 2025 calendar year with a pair of wins. CNU is taking on a Marymount squad let by first-year head coach Claire Mattox. The Saints are 3-9 to start the year after defeating Washington College (Md.) and falling to Immaculata in their last two matchups.

The all-time series favors the home team as Christopher Newport trails Marymount, 20-22, in 42 previous matchups. In Arlington, the Saints are 16-8 against the Captains including wins in two of the last three trips, but Christopher Newport captured a 69-52 victory in their most recent jaunt up I-95 to Northern Virginia on January 25, 2023.

The game will be played at Converse Family Fieldhouse in Arlington, Va. with tip set for 6:00 p.m. For fans unable to attend in person, a live video stream and live stats will be available with links found at the top of this page and on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.

The Captains continue to be a force in Division III women's basketball as the team improved to 116-5 over the last 121 games while maintaining a spot in the Top 25 throughout the current run. Of those five losses, only two have come in the regular season as the Captains have been one of the most consistent winning teams in Division III over the last five years. The WBCA Division III Coaches Poll lists NYU as the unanimous number one team followed by Scranton, Illinois Wesleyan, Bowdoin, UW-Whitewater, Gustavus Adolphus, and the Captains among the top seven. In the D3hoops.com Top 25, the order is slightly different with NYU earning 24 of a possible 25 first-place votes followed by Illinois Wesleyan, earning the remaining vote. The poll then lists Scranton, UW-Oshkosh, Bowdoin, Gustavus Adolphus, UW-Whitewater, Whitman, and Christopher Newport among the top nine teams, in order.

In the most recent game against Haverford, CNU received a boost to the lineup as fifth-year senior point guard Gabbi San Diego played for the first time since early December after an injury. San Diego played six minutes and buried the first shot she attempted with a three-pointer from the corner; she also snagged one steal in the game for CNU. Junior Hailey Kellogg, the only CNU player averaging 17 minutes or more per game, has taken on the bulk of the duties at PG in San Diego's absence and has been a huge factor in the Captains' winning ways. Kellogg leads the team with 41 assists and ranks second on the team in steals with 30.

The Captains also showed off its depth up front in the win against the Fords with impressive contributions from a half-dozen forwards. Jessica Dornak and Sarah Pritz each scored five points, Sydney Sherman hauled in six rebounds, and Emma O'Connor added six points, four boards, and three assists off the bench. Starters Hannah Orloff (14 pts, 7 reb) and Elizabeth Creed (5 pts, 8 reb, 5 ast) each had standout performances as well.

Marymount will look to slow the Captains with a tested lineup that has already faced four teams receiving votes in the national polls this year including sixth-ranked Washington and Lee and 15th-ranked Gettysburg. The Saints have notched two of their three wins at home this season with victories against Lynchburg (67-57) and Baruch (70-56). Samantha Bulik leads the squad with 9.6 points per game while Kaylah Barr is adding 8.8 points per game this season.

Following the trip to Marymount, the Captains will return home to play four straight home games. CNU welcomes Warren Wilson on Sunday, January 12 before facing Salisbury (Jan 18), Virginia Wesleyan (Jan 22), and Mary Washington (Jan 25).
