GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Heading into their first road game in three weeks, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team moved into the top-five nationally according to the WBCA Coaches' Poll on Tuesday afternoon. CNU will travel to Guilford College (11-7) for a 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening to take on the Quakers at the Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse.
The Captains, sporting an overall record of 19-1 this season, rank No. 5 in the most recent version of the national rankings while holding at No. 10 in the D3hoops.com Top 25. NYU is the unanimous No. 1 team in the WBCA poll with Scranton, Illinois Wesleyan, and Bowdoin picked ahead of Christopher Newport, in order, this week.
CNU will be taking on Guilford College for just the seventh time in the all-time series. The Captains have won all six previous meetings, including two under head coach
Bill Broderick since 2012-13. The matchup on Wednesday will be the first head-to-head bout since the Captains traveled to Greensboro in 2014-15 and earned a 73-61 win.
The Quakers come into the Wednesday evening tilt with an 11-7 overall record after a setback to nationally-ranked Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon. CNU has won 12 in a row including a pair of road wins at Moravian on December 30 and at Marymount on January 8. The Captains most recently downed Mary Washington at home, 73-49.
In the win, junior guard
McKenna Snively poured in a game-high 14 points while grabbing a career-high tying six rebounds. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and tacked on a couple of three-pointers to help lift CNU over the Eagles. Also finishing in double figures was fifth year senior
Gabbi San Diego with 11 points after knocking down three shots from beyond the arc.
This season, the Captains boast one of the most potent offenses in the nation, ranking fourth with 80.8 points per game.
Camille Malagar (9.0 ppg),
Hannah Orloff (8.5 ppg), and
Elizabeth Creed (8.1 ppg) lead the squad while the rest of the roster has showcased a tremendous amount of depth this year. Orloff was named the C2C Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the fourth time this week, joining Anaya Simmons as the only CNU player to collect as many weekly certificates from the C2C in a single season.
Guilford features one of the top Division III defenses as the Quakers have forced 27.2 turnovers per game to rank sixth nationally. Guilford ranks sixth nationally in steals per game (16.9) and in the top-100 nationally in blocks per game (3.8). The Quakers are also averaging 72.5 points per game to rank as one of the top-50 scoring offenses in the country.
Leading the way for Guilford is Zoe Bayer with 14.2 points per game while knocking down over 47 percent from the field. Courtney McMillan is adding 12.2 points per game while hauling in a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game.
Christopher Newport will return home on Saturday, February 1 against Regent University at 2:00 p.m. It is the penultimate home regular season game of the season and will be followed by a February 8 matchup against Penn State Harrisburg. The regular season will then close with two straight on the road at Mary Washinton (Feb 15) and Salisbury (Feb 20).
