MADISON, Wis. -- Facing challenging conditions and a tough course at TPC Wisconsin, the Christopher Newport women's golf team wrapped up another top-five finish to start the 2024-25 season by taking fifth-place at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational on Monday afternoon. Four of CNU's five golfers finished in the top-20 on the leaderboard including an impressive 13th-place showing from rookie Ayla Browning (+15) in the 36-hole tournament.

As a team, Christopher Newport paired the opening round 303 with a 327 on day two for the eighth-best team score of the day in the 17-team field. The Captains fired a 62-over 630 (303-327) in the tournament, entering the top-ten all-time tied for 6th in low tournament scoring during a 36-hole event.

Playing at TPC Wisconsin on a Par 71 track that played over 5,600 yards, the Captains handled the tough course amid wet conditions on Sunday and a chilly, breezy day on Monday. Centre College (+43) won the event with the Captains within 20 strokes and just two back of a two-way tie for second between Illinois Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon (+60).

On day two, it was junior Katie Watson with the best performance for Christopher Newport as she moved up into a tie for 18th with a pair of her teammates, Alex Delgado and Elena Rezac. The trio finished the two-day event at 17-over par in 159 strokes. Watson recorded the low round on Monday with a seven-over 78 that included 11 pars and one birdie with a two on the 141-yard par three 5th hole. After not scoring for CNU in the first round, she led the way on Monday by shaving three strokes off of her opening round score.

Wrapping up the event with the best score of the tournament for CNU was rookie Ayla Browning, who finished with a 157 (76-81), to edge out her teammates by two strokes. The freshman tied for 13th and was just five strokes back of a spot in the top-five. In Monday's second round, Browning had a stellar run of six straight pars and eight in a stretch of nine holes. She played the back nine expertly, with seven pars and two bogeys to finish the back at two-over.

Alex Delgado had the next best finish on day two with a 12-over 83. She wrapped up the two-day event with a 159 (76-83) and tied for 18th. Delgado added ten more pars to her tournament after a team-high 11 during the first day to finish the 36-hole event with 21 even holes. Rezac also finished with a 159 (74-85) and dropped in two more birdies in the second round. She sank a three on the 359-yard par four 3rd hole and added another three on the 282-yard par four 16th. Add those birdies to four more pars and the veteran wrapped up another top-20 finish.

Finally, Taylor Davis finished in the top-half of the leaderboard with a 165 (77-88), tied for 42nd at 23-over par. She scored par on six of ten holes in a row including back-to-back pars on 11 and 12.

The Captains will return home for practice over the next two weeks and will return to action on October 7-8 at the Carnegie Mellon Fall Invite, played at Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pa.
