NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the second time in a four-day span, the Christopher Newport University softball team will travel to North Carolina for a doubleheader.
Keith Parr's team will head to Rocky Mount on Wednesday, and the ninth-ranked Captains will take on the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan University. The twin bill is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Edge Field.
Christopher Newport is coming off two wins in Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday, when the Captains defeated Meredith College by scores of 8-0 and 10-0. Both games were halted after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. The victories improved CNU's record to 18-5 for the season.
The Captains swept the weekly honors this week from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, as senior outfielder
Jules Donnelly was named Player of the Week, and junior lefty
Jamie Martin was tabbed Pitcher of the Week. Donnelly has posted an average this season of .388 with six doubles and eight runs batted in. She is also 11-for-11 on stolen base attempts. Martin is now 5-1 with an earned run average of 1.36, and hasn't allowed a run in her last 11 innings of work.
Christopher Newport's leadoff hitter, freshman outfielder
Candace Slaw, is now hitting .457 for the season, and is 24-of-27 on stolen base attempts. Senior third baseman
Brooke Greaver has returned from an injury, and is 12-for-25 (.480) with two home runs and 16 runs batted in in just 11 games played. Senior outfielder
Katie Currin tops the squad with 19 runs batted in, and Currin and senior second baseman
Caroline Pollock top the team with three home runs each.
North Carolina Wesleyan, a member of the USA South Athletic Conference, has a mark of 14-12 heading into play on Wednesday. The Bishops split a doubleheader at Southern Virginia on Saturday in their last action, winning 4-2 in the opener and falling in the nightcap, 4-3. CNU and N.C. Wesleyan have played 90 times in the past, and the Captains hold a 65-25 advantage in the all-time series. The schools haven't met since the 2021 season, and Christopher Newport has won the last eight games, and 23 of the last 24 in the all-time series, which dates back to March of 1985. CNU and NCWU were longtime league rivals in the Dixie and then USA South Athletic Conference.
