Live Video  //  Live Stats  //  Game Program

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University hosts Meredith College on Sunday, as the eighth-ranked Captains put their nine-game winning streak on the line. The Captains, 24-5, host the Avenging Angels with the doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 p.m. It will be Senior Day at Captains Park, and a pre-game ceremony honoring six senior student-athletes will start at approximately 12:45.

CNU hasn't seen action since sweeping two games at York College of Pennsylvania on April 17th. Last Sunday, the Captains had a scheduled doubleheader vs. Lynchburg wiped out by rain. Meredith is 16-18 on the year, and playing a doubleheader at home against North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday before coming to Newport News on Sunday to take on the Captains.

Christopher Newport has enjoyed a balance of great pitching and hitting throughout the season, and especially over the recent nine-game winning streak. In the pitching circle, junior lefty Jamie Martin has not allowed a run in her last 28 innings of work, and has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week the last three weeks, and five times in all this season. Martin has improved her record to 8-1 and has an earned run average of 0.92. She has struck out 70 batters in 53 innings this season, and has issued just seven walks. Junior Kate Alger has a record of 11-4 so far this season, and an earned run average of 1.96. She has struck out 97 batters in 93 innings of work, while giving up just 18 walks. Alger was named the National Pitcher of the Week earlier this season.

At the plate, freshman leadoff hitter Candace Slaw has been outstanding, with a team-high .457 batting average and 48 base hits. Slaw, CNU's centerfielder, also tops the squad with 30 stolen bases in 34 attempts. Senior second baseman Caroline Pollock has hit a team-high four home runs, and senior Katie Currin leads the Captains in runs batted in with 24. Pollock and Currin will be honored along with fellow seniors Brooke Childress, Jules Donnelly, Brooke Greaver, and Delaney Nuckols in Sunday's pre-game Senior Day ceremony.

CNU and Meredith played a doubleheader three weeks ago on April 7th in Raleigh, and the Captains came away with two victories, 8-0 and 10-0, with both games stopped after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The schools have met 39 times in the all-time series, and the Captains hold a 36-3 lead in the series, and have won the last 15 games.
