NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University moved up to the eighth spot in the latest weekly poll from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The Captains, who have won seven straight games, will take on the Spartans of York College on Wednesday in York, Pa. The twin bill is set to begin at 1:30 p.m.

Keith Parr's squad had been ranked ninth in the nation prior to Tuesday's new poll release. The Captains are 22-5 and coming off a sweep at Mary Washington on Saturday. York enters play on Wednesday with a record of 18-10, but the Spartans have dropped their last five games. York dropped a pair on Sunday at Salisbury, the new top-ranked team in the country, in its last games played.

Junior pitcher Jamie Martin has led the Captains in the circle, and has not allowed a run in her last 24 innings of pitching. The Lorton, Va., native has lowered her earned run average to 1.00, and has now struck out 60 batters in 49 innings this year, while walking just five batters. She has been named the Pitcher of the Week in the Cast-To-Coast Athletic Conference four times this season, and the last two weeks.

In the batter's box, freshman outfielder Candace Slaw tops the team with a .454 average. Slaw, CNU's leadoff hitter, leads the team in hits with 44 and runs scored with 29. She also tops the squad in stolen bases with 28, and has been caught stealing just four times. Seniors Katie Currin and Caroline Pollock are tied in home runs and runs batted in, leading the squad with three home runs and 21 RBI's each.

CNU and York have played 18 games in the past, and the Captains hold a 14-4 lead in the all-time series. The teams met last year at Captains Park in the NCAA tournament, and CNU recorded an 8-3 victory.
