UNION, N.J. -- The eighth-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will continue its league slate on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains travel to Kean for a Coastal Lacrosse Conference clash at Alumni Stadium.
Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 8-4 overall, including 3-2 on the road. Meanwhile, Kean is 8-5 with a 4-2 mark at home.
For those fans unable to attend the game, Kean will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at KeanAthletics.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport was last in action on April 6 when the squad dropped an 18-12 decision against No. 1 Salisbury at Jennings Family Stadium.
Alex Brendes led the Captains with five points against the Sea Gulls, while
Andrew Cook also netted a hat-trick. On the defensive side,
Luke Nardone matched his career-high with three caused turnovers, and
Zac Hanway collected nine saves in 48 minutes of action.
Aided by their work on Saturday, Cook and Brendes both moved into the top-25 on CNU's single-season points list. Cook already ranks 16th on the program's all-time charts with 61 points this year, while Brendes is 25th with 48. With two more points, Brendes would join former All-American Dylan Rice as the only players in program history with four 50-point seasons.
Warner Cabaniss also collected his 100th ground ball of the year against Salisbury, becoming the first player in school history to secure at least 100 rollers in three separate campaigns. He also landed his first goal of the season against the Sea Gulls, as did fellow faceoff specialist
Michael Brost.
On the career charts, several Captains are also inching towards history.
Coby Auslander is two goals shy of the 100th for his career, while
Brett Jackson is eight away from the same mark.
Ryan Young is also seven ground balls away from the 200th of his tenure. He would be just the sixth player in school history to reach that mark and the first defenseman to accomplish that feat.
Kean comes into the weekend after knocking off Penn College, 17-9, on Wednesday. Against the Wildcats, Anthony Porter chipped in with eight points, including six assists. Dylan Johnson also landed four goals for the Cougars, while Jacob Dvoor went 15-for-25 on faceoffs. Between the pipes, Nick Paterno secured 12 saves to earn the win.
Overall this season, Kean ranks fifth in the nation in scoring offense with a 17.08 goals-per-game average. The squad is also fourth in assists-per-contest (11.38) and 11th in man-up offense (.500). On an individual level, Nick Thorne leads the country with 11 man-up goals, while Anthony Porter slots sixth among all competitors with a 3.23 assists-per-game average.
Saturday's bout will mark the third all-time meeting between the two programs after CNU captured a pair of wins last year, including a 21-14 triumph in the semifinals of the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Tournament. During the postseason clash, Brendes and
Drew Miller combined for 10 goals, while Hanway added 16 saves.
After the weekend, Christopher Newport will remain on the road for another league battle at Mary Washington on April 17 at 3:30 p.m.
