FARMINGTON, Pa. -- Led by veteran tandem
Elena Rezac (+7) and
Alex Delgado (+7), the Christopher Newport women's golf team opened play at the Carnegie Mellon Fall Invite in tenth place after the opening round. The Captains were 37-over par as a team with Rezac and Delgado sitting in the top-20 on the individual leaderboard.
Four of the five CNU players scored at least one birdie in the opening round while Rezac led the team with two birdies. She sank a three on the 335-yard par four 4th hole and added a four on the 507-yard par five 11th.
Delgado had a very consistent opening round with eight pars on the front nine and added five more on the back. She finished with a seven-over 79 to match Rezac for the best finish on day one.
Rookie
Taylor Davis was just two strokes behind with a nine-over 81 on day one. She birdied the 236-yard par four 13th hole in a run of four straight holes at par or better on the back nine. Starting on the 10th hole, Davis was sitting at even par after five before making the turn at a team-best 40 strokes.
Freshman
Ayla Browning (+14) wrapped up the scoring for CNU in the first round. She birdied the 496-yard par five 8th hole for her best score of the day.
Katie Watson also dropped in a birdie with a two on the 126-yard par three 7th hole. Watson is at 15-over after the first round of play.
CNU will return to action early Tuesday morning to wrap up the 36-hole event at Nemacolin Resort. Twelve teams and 64 players are set to compete in the tournament.
