NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team is now back in the top five nationally as the D3hoops.com Top 25 voters listed the Captains (15-1) as the No. 5 ranked team in Division III. According to the WBCA, CNU is ranked No. 8 ahead of the team's next outing slated for Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. against Marymount University (12-4). CNU will host the Saints at the Freeman Center where they boast the longest winning streak in Division III with 45 straight home wins.

Christopher Newport is coming off one of the most dominant wins in Freeman Center history with a 58-point victory over Cheyney University (PA) last week, 103-45. In the win, the Captains got a pair of 19-point performances from
Alivia Giles and
McKenna Snively to lead the way. It was the third win in a row since dropping the team's first regular season game in four years when SUNY New Paltz put a blemish on the nationally-ranked CNU schedule on December 29; the Captains have gone on to defeat Stevens (77-61) and Rowan (82-57) since the setback as well.
The Captains will look to close the gap between the two teams in the all-time series as the record currently stands at 19-22 in the hotly contested matchup against the Saints. CNU has won three of the last four including a 54-point win the last time the two teams faced off in the Freeman Center during the 2021-22 season, 93-39.
This season, Marymount is 12-4 under third-year head coach Margaret White, featuring a veteran team that includes a pair of fifth-year starters. Chandler Eddleton leads the team with 19.4 points per game while fifth-year guard Symantha Shackelford is adding 13.5 points per game. The Saints have won six of their last seven and 11 of 13 heading into the Wednesday evening matchup.
The Captains will counter with one of the deepest rosters in the nation, ranking second in Division III in bench scoring with 39.0 points per game. The Captains lead the nation in total points and are a top-20 scoring offense with 77.0 points per game. Defensively, CNU ranks seventh nationally in turnovers forced per game (26.7) and 18 in steals per game (13.8).
With her 19-point showing against Cheyney, Giles leaped back into the scoring lead for the Captains with 10.8 points per game.
Hannah Kaloi, who sat out the last game, also is averaging 10.8 points per game in eight starts this season.
Alexia Lindsey is leading the squad with 34 steals this year while
Hailey Kellogg and
Gabbi San Diego have combined for 85 assists at the point guard position.
Following the Wednesday night home game, the Captains will travel to Salisbury University on Saturday, January 13 to face off against the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe.
