NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After winning their eighth straight game on Saturday against Salisbury and improving to 20-1 on the season, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team moved up to No. 4 in the D3hoops.com National Rankings while holding steady at No. 7 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll. The Captains will host Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington (12-6) on Wednesday night at the Freeman Center for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night at 6:00 p.m.
All Christopher Newport faculty and staff are invited to attend the game free of charge with tickets available at the Freeman Center box office prior to the action tipping off. Christopher Newport eclipsed the 20-win plateau for the eighth straight season and the 24th time in CNU women's basketball history when they captured a 71-61 win over Salisbury on Saturday. The victory also extended a program-record home winning streak to 49 consecutive games.
CNU will be taking on Mary Washington for the 62nd time in the all-time series with a 40-21 advantage in the matchup. The Captains have won ten in a row against the Eagles and are 23-7 overall at home against the conference foe. It will be the first of back-to-back meetings with Mary Washington as CNU will make the return trip to Fredericksburg, Va. next Wednesday to wrap up the regular season home-and-home series.
This season, Christopher Newport has been as balanced as ever under head coach
Bill Broderick, with the Captains leading the nation in bench scoring at just under 40 points per game. CNU is one of only three teams in the top-40 scoring offenses in Division III that play without a single player averaging at least 13 points per game; the Captains have nine active players pouring in 4.5 points per game or better.
Junior forward
Hannah Kaloi is coming off a strong 19-point performance against the Sea Gulls and is currently leading the squad in points per game with 12.3 this year. She has also added 4.8 rebounds per game while starting all 11 games she has played. Senior forward
Alivia Giles is adding 11.8 points per game with a team-high 6.3 rebounds per contest while also knocking down a team-best 56.9 percent of her shots.
Also helping lengthen the Captains' frontcourt is sophomore
Ashley Steadman, who will be facing off against her sister for the first time on Wednesday evening. Rookie Jenna Steadman has played in 17 games for Mary Washington this season; Ashley is averaging just under four points per game in nine games played while working around an injury this season for CNU.
The Eagles are led by veteran guard/forward Jordan Carpenter, who is averaging a double-double with over 16 points and 11 rebounds per game this season. Carpenter is also one of the league's top defensive players with 45 steals and 16 blocked shots. In the paint, Mary Washington also features Sydney Sherman, who is adding 12.3 points per game for the Eagles with 14 blocks.
Following the Wednesday evening matchup at the Freeman Center, the two teams will play again on Wednesday, February 7 for CNU's next game. After that, CNU has just two regular season games left with a Valentine's Day date with Southern Virginia and a road trip to Warren Wilson on February 17. CNU will then host the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at the Freeman Center from Feb 22-24.
