SALISBURY, Md. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team travels to Salisbury University on Saturday for a 6:00 p.m. matchup against the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe. The Captains (16-1) will face the Sea Gulls at the Maggs Physical Activities Center for the 42nd time in the all-time series history. The game time was originally scheduled for 2:00 p.m. but has been adjusted due to obstacles during travel on Saturday morning.
Earlier this week, CNU held off Marymount University, 87-77, and improved to 16-1 overall. Senior
Alivia Giles poured in a career-high 28 points in the win while also grabbing 11 rebounds for a double-double. Senior
Gabbi San Diego also notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists, marking the first time since 2009 that a player has dished 10 or more assists in a game.
The Captains are ranked No. 5 in the nation according to the D3hoops.com Top 25 and No. 8 in the WBCA Division III Coaches Poll. CNU is 6-0 on the road this season and have extended the nation's longest road winning streak to 38 straight. Earlier this season, the Captains passed Amherst to set an NCAA Division III record for consecutive road wins.
Heading into Saturday's matchup between the two programs, Christopher Newport owns a 29-12 all-time advantage in the all-time series. The Captains have won 14 straight against the Sea Gulls starting with a February 3, 2016 victory, 55-52, at the Maggs Center. Salisbury features a first-year head coach in Aprile Preller, who faced the Captains eight times as a player between 2015-19.
Christopher Newport enters the game ranked third nationally in bench points, averaging 37.6 points per game from the reserves. The Captains lead the country in total points while boasting the 19th-ranked scoring offense in the nation with 77.6 points per game. Defensively, CNU ranks seventh nationally in turnovers forced per game (26.41) and 19th in steals per game (13.6).
Individually, Giles' career performance propelled her back to the top of the scoring lead for Christopher Newport, averaging 11.8 points per game as one of two players to start all 17 games this year. The other is
Camille Malagar, adding 9.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game while also ranking second on the team in steals.
Salisbury will counter with a team that is 6-11 so far this season while averaging over 60.6 points per game. Alex Bull started the first 16 games and leads the Sea Gulls with 11.3 points per game; Nicole Miller has started all 17 games and is adding 10.5 points per game. Miller has knocked down 23 three-pointers while Abby Plaugher leads the team with 26. Under the first-year head coach, the Sea Gulls feature a young roster with six freshmen and two sophomores.

Following the Saturday afternoon matchup, the Captains will return home to the Freeman Center for the next four games. First, CNU will take on Meredith College on Wednesday, January 17 at 6:00 p.m., followed by matchups with Warren Wilson (Jan 20- 2pm), Salisbury (Jan 27- 2pm), and Mary Washington (Jan 31- 6pm).
