Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team saw three tandems advance to the Round of 16 of the Championship Draw at the 2023 ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday and all three were back in action on Sunday morning. Picking up a win and advancing to the Quarterfinal round were veterans
Raine Weis and
Tessa Trate.
The Captains' top pair earned an early morning win on the indoor courts by taking down Oviya Kumaran and Lola Diaz from Swarthmore College, 8-3. In the quarters, Jay Xiao and Samantha Wang from Johns Hopkins pulled away from the Captains to earn an 8-4 win.
It was the second straight year the CNU pair earned two wins in the ITA Regionals and the first time since 2017 that three Captains' duos advanced in doubles play at the event.
Kiersten Chang played with
Samantha Robertson and earned a first-round victory before suffering an 8-4 loss to top-seeded Gabriela Moss and Lauren Long on Sunday;
Kylie Schaefer and
Megan Bauer also earned a first round win on Saturday before suffering an 8-0 loss to Hana Kimmey and Amanda Hagino, the second seed, on Sunday.
Christopher Newport will continue their fall schedule with a pair of first-semester duals against North Carolina Wesleyan and Johns Hopkins in late October. The Captains will first host the Battling Bishops on October 27 before welcoming in the Blue Jays on October 28.
