Nationally-Ranked Women's Soccer Showdown Set for Tuesday Night as Captains Host Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On Tuesday night, a pair of nationally-ranked teams will take the pitch at Captains Field as the undefeated Christopher Newport women's soccer team will host cross-water rivals from Virginia Wesleyan University (2-1-0) for a rematch of the 2022 NCAA Division III National Quarterfinals. The Captains (4-0-0) will kick off at 7:30 p.m. against the Marlins with live stats and a live video webcast available at CNUsports.com.

The last time the two teams matched up was the final game of the season for Christopher Newport a year ago when the Marlins slipped by the home team in a penalty kick shootout to advance to the NCAA National Semifinals. That result saw the Captains' all-time record against Virginia Wesleyan fall to 10-13-5, snapping a four-game win streak against the Marlins. CNU has not lost to the Marlins since 2016 and owns a 6-1-3 record in the last ten games.

CNU is coming off a pair of wins this weekend, defeating Gettysburg College, 1-0, and Pacific Lutheran University, 2-0, to improve to 3-0-0 on the season in home games. The Marlins suffered the team's first loss on the same field, dropping a 2-0 decision to Pacific Lutheran on Friday night after picking up home wins against Southwestern, 1-0, and UW-Oshkosh, 5-2.

The Captains have been led by a dominating defense that has surrendered just a single game through the first four games with that tally coming on a penalty kick in the first game. Since, CNU has picked up three straight shutouts while holding opponents to just 15 total shots over the first four games. Senior Nyah Savage has played with junior Reanna Slater and sophomore Jackie Stallard for the bulk of the minutes on the back line. Rookie Bella DiTommaso has also been a major factor on defense, playing in front of the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Jaya Daniel. Daniel has a 0.25 GAA and an .857 save percentage so far this season.

CNU has also collected the first two C2C Offensive Players of the Week in rookie Alex Devers and sophomore Kyleigh Gough. Both have a pair of gamewinners this year, including back-to-back games from Gough, who leads the team with five points on two goals and one helper.

Virginia Wesleyan, who was ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, has been led by Alexis Miller with two goals and two assists for six points. Shyenne Diaz has also added two goals while Abigail Smith has three points on a goal and one assist.

For fans unable to attend the game in person, live stats and a live video webcast at CNUsports.com. Following the action, CNU will hit the road for a pair of games in the Buckeye State this weekend. The Captains will travel to Capital University to face the host Comets on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Sunday afternoon tilt against Ohio Northern University.
