CNU Women's Soccer Falls at Mary Washington, 2-0, in Saturday Afternoon Clash

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Suffering a 2-0 loss on the road at Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team saw a five-game shutout streak come to a close when the Eagles (11-1-3) scored twice in the first half. The Captains fall to 8-2-3 overall this season in the first regular season road loss for the program since 2019.

Heading into the weekend matchup at the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe, the Captains had logged an incredible streak of 37 straight regular season road games without a loss. Since losing at Salisbury on October 12, 2019, the Captains have gone 32-0-5 while playing in their opponents home venue. That streak was snapped at Mary Washington on Saturday, who is also one of only two teams to defeat the Captains in the regular season since that same 2019 matchup at Salisbury.

The Eagles, who reached the NCAA Tournament National Quarterfinals last year, extended a 13-game unbeaten streak while being led by a goal and an assist from Maci Landel.

With a goal in the 20th minute on Saturday, the Eagles snuffed out a Christopher Newport shutout streak that had lasted over five games and 450 minutes of play. Landel played a corner kick onto the near post where Naomi Knight was waiting for the header strike. Then, with just over a minute remaining in the first half, Landel put away a penalty kick goal to double the lead for the home team.

Senior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway was defenseless in both goal-scoring moments and suffered just her sixth career loss.

On the offensive side, the Captains clawed back for chances in the second half and narrowly missed at least trimming the lead in the setback. In the 64th minute, junior midfielder Avery Spell found teammmate Anaya Lozano with a beautiful feed through a pair of defenders. Lozano then ripped a hard shot that fell just wide of the goalmouth and beyond the diving goalkeepers reach. Lozano then was sprung free by Catie Borsuk on a ball from the left side that she spun into the box and found herself open for a shot. This time, the ball sailed high and the Captains remained scoreless.

Late in the half as the chances continued to mount, it was Bella Aguayo with a blistering line drive that whistled just north of the crossbar and Bella DiTommaso with a late try that also went high.

The Captains will look to bounce back on Sunday evening as they play host to Regent University at 6:00 p.m.
