MEDFORD, Mass. -- Making the team's 12th NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and seventh consecutive trip to the sectional round, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball Captains have a challenging matchup with No. 24 Wartburg College (23-6) at 5:00 p.m. on Friday evening. The two powers will face off on a neutral court at Tufts University in Cousens Gymnasium as the first of two Round of 16 games on Friday.
Tickets will be sold at the door starting one-hour prior to tip-off. Adults will pay $10 for tickets while students and senior citizens can get tickets for $7. For fans unable to attend the anticipated matchup in person, live stats and a live video webcast will be available online free of charge.
Friday evening's tilt will be the first matchup ever between the two programs. The Knights will become the 43rd different program the Captains have faced in the NCAA Tournament all-time. In fact, it will be the first game for Christopher Newport against any team in the American Rivers Conference.
Wartburg is led by Bob Amsberry, who was at the helm when the team won it's 800th game in program history earlier this season. The Knights have won 23 games or more every season since 2015-16 including a Final Four run and 31-1 campaign in 2017-18. Christopher Newport's helmsman,
Bill Broderick, has guided CNU to the Round of 16 in nine of his ten seasons as head coach for the Captains.
The undefeated Captains (28-0) reached the second weekend with wins over Brooklyn College and Elizabethtown College at home last weekend. As they have all season long, the Captains lead the nation in scoring margin (+35.1) and continue to feature one of the nation's elite offenses with one of Division III's finest defenses. CNU ranks third nationally in scoring offense (86.5) and second in field-goal percentage (.468) while the defense ranks 22nd in scoring defense (51.4) and sixth nationally in steals per game (16.2).
Wartburg defeated a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in the opening weekend of NCAA Tournament action, downing No. 13 Baldwin-Wallace and No. 6 Hope to advance to sectionals. Wartburg features one of the nation's most dangerous three-point attacks ranking third nationally in three-pointers made and 13th in three-point percentage.
The winning team will advance to play the winner of Tufts University vs. Trinity University (Texas) on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
