REDLANDS, Calif. -- In a top-25 battle in California on Wednesday, the 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team was edged out by No. 15 Redlands, 6-3. The Captains (1-6) fell behind, 2-1, after doubles before capturing two wins in singles play.
Tessa Trate led the way in the match, earning wins at both No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. The veteran paired with
Raine Weis to continue their torrid start to the season with an 8-2 win on the top line of pairs play against Olivia Rockwood and Kendall Bolock. The Captains top tandem improved to 5-2 in duals this season and 11-3 overall.
Trate would then earn a straight set win at No. 2 singles against Rockwood. She picked up her second win of the spring by a final score of 6-4, 6-1. The Captains other win came from junior
Kiersten Chang, outlasting her opponent at No. 4 singles, Mia Goldstein. After dropping the first set, Chang rallied for a 6-1 win in the second and then finished off Goldstein with a 10-8 win in the third set.
In a schedule change to account for rain in Southern California, the Captains will now face Caltech at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday in their next match.
