NCAA Announces Women's Basketball Sectional Hosts; No. 1 Captains Headed to Medford, Mass. to Face No. 24 Wartburg

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- After a pair of dominant victories during the opening round of the tournament, the top-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team is headed to Massachusetts for the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Championship next weekend. CNU will take on No. 24 Wartburg in the Round of 16 this Friday, March 10 on the campus of Tufts University.

The NCAA Division III Selection Committee announced the hosts of the sectional round of the tournament on Sunday: Tufts University, Smith College, Transylvania University, and Babson College. In the Tufts pod, Christopher Newport and Wartburg will be joined by the host Jumbos, ranked No. 21, hosting Trinity (Texas), ranked No. 5 in the nation.

Christopher Newport and Wartburg will be the first game in the pod played on Friday while Trinity and Tufts will play the nightcap. Game time is listed as 5:00 p.m. at Cousens Gymnasium with the winning team advancing to the national quarterfinals on Saturday. Ticket information and live coverage will be announced later in the week and will be available at CNUsports.com as the information is made available.

The undefeated Captains are 28-0 this season and are one of only two teams left in the nation without a loss. Christopher Newport is now 61-1 since December 28, 2019 when CNU dropped a regular season contest to Tufts. The only loss in that stretch came against Trinity (Texas) in last year's Round of 16.

CNU advanced to the team's seventh consecutive Round of 16, joining Tufts as one of only five Division III programs to ever run a streak of at least seven straight. The Captains defeated Brooklyn College (89-52) in the opening round and Elizabethtown College (65-55) in the Round of 32. Wartburg (23-6) earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament and defeated No. 13 Baldwin-Wallace (57-43) in the first round before toppling defending national champion and No. 6 Hope (81-67) in the second round.

The matchup will be the first ever between the two programs.

Christopher Newport University is one of only two athletic departments to feature both men's and women's basketball teams in the Sweet Sixteen this year. The Captains men's team, ranked No. 2 in the nation, will host the sectional round at the Freeman Center starting Friday, March 10.
