Bill Broderick Named National Co-Coach of the Year; Sondra Fan and Anaya Simmons Collect D3hoops.com All-American Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Setting a new standard for success at the helm of Christopher Newport women's basketball, the D3hoops.com national awards were released on Monday morning revealing that head coach Bill Broderick was named D3hoops.com National Co-Coach of the Year. Additionally, for the first time ever, a pair of CNU student-athletes were recognized by the national media entity in the same season as graduate guard Sondra Fan and senior forward Anaya Simmons each hauled in fourth team All-American plaudits.

In a release published on D3hoops.com Monday morning, it was announced that Broderick would share D3hoops.com National Coach of the Year honors with his adversary in the NCAA Division III National Championship Game this Saturday, Juli Fulks from Transylvania University. Both coaches have guided their teams through the 2022-23 season without a loss and into the title game for the first time in either team's history.

Broderick joins a growing list at Christopher Newport to be named his sports top guide after Carrie Moura (2006 Field Hockey), Rush Cole (2008 Men's Tennis), Dan Weiler (2018 Women's Soccer), Jamie Gunderson (2021 Women's Soccer), Keith Parr (2021 Softball), and John Krikorian (2023 Men's Basketball) each collected National Coach of the Year honors. He is the first women's basketball coach to accomplish the feat and has thrice been named the D3hoops.com Region Coach of the Year (2017, 2022, 2023).

In his 10th season, Broderick has showcased some of his best work by sporting a spotless overall record at 31-0 heading into the national championship game. Despite losing his starting point guard for eight games during the regular season and then postseason injuries to two starters including the aforementioned All-American, Anaya Simmons, Broderick has led his team to new heights in 2022-23.

CNU leads the nation in scoring margin, outpacing their 31 opponents this season by a margin of nearly 33 points per game, and ranks in the top-25 in both scoring offense and defense. Putting incredible balance on display, the Captains have scored over 84 points per game, ranking fifth highest in Division III, and have held opponents to just 51.5 points per game, ranking 22nd nationally. CNU takes care of the basketball, ranking in the top ten in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.19) while forcing opponents to lose track of the ball better than nearly any other team, ranking fifth in turnovers forced per game (27.7). Only two players average more than 22 minutes per game and 11 Captains are on the court for over 10 minutes per contest this season -- Broderick's depth has led CNU to one of the most incredible runs in Division III history, posting a 74-1 record since the calendar turned to 2020.

In his 11th year and 10th season as head coach, Broderick recorded his 250th career win while securing the fourth straight conference championship. He has moved up into the top-ten all-time in NCAA history, at all three levels, for career winning percentage with a mark of over 83.49 percent in his decorated career. At Division III specifically, he now ranks fourth among active coaches behind only G.P Gromacki (Amherst), Brian Morehouse (Hope), and Cameron Hill (Trinity (TX)).

On the court, Fan and Simmons continued to add to their impressive ledgers. Fan repeated as a D3hoops.com All-American after collecting second team honors last year. Simmons added the first career recognition from D3hoops.com after also being named a WBCA First Team All-American earlier this season.

Fan is just one three-pointer shy from tying Kinsey Pritchett for the sixth most in a single season and two away from becoming only the third player to knock down 70 or more three-pointers in a single season. This season, she ranks in the top-25 nationally in three-point shooting percentage and 30th overall in total makes from beyond the arc. She has made 216 career triples, ranking second most in program history, while shooting 39.7 percent from deep over 114 career games.

This season, the Poquoson, Va. native leads the team with 14.4 points per game while shooting 45.8 percent from the field. She adds 3.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while playing 22.5 minutes per game.

In the front court, Simmons has been a dominant force throughout her career and finished her 2022-23 season with the highest field-goal percentage in the country for the second straight year. She became only the fourth player in NCAA Division III history to go back-to-back as stat champion in FG% after knocking down 68.5 percent of her shots this season.

Over the course of her career, the Williansburg, Va. native shattered the Christopher Newport and Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference records for efficiency, scoring 63.3 percent of her attempts from the floor. She currently ranks seventh all-time in Division III and was an integral part of the program's success this season as the team recorded 31 consecutive wins. She has scored over 1,000 career points and hauled in over 500 rebounds while averaging a career-high 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. This year, she was named a first team WBCA All-American, the Region VI Player of the Year, a first team D3hoops.com All-Region selection, and first team All-Conference pick.

CNU has won 74 of the last 75 games with Fan and Simmons leading the way. On Saturday, Christopher Newport will face No. 2 Trinity University (32-0) at Noon (ET) / 11:00 am (CT) in the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas for the NCAA Division III Championship.
