NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Opening the spring schedule on Saturday afternoon, the No. 23 Christopher Newport women's tennis team will welcome in a top-25 opponent in Johns Hopkins University. The match will begin at 12:30 p.m. as the Captains take on the No. 25 Blue Jays.
The season opener will be the fifth matchup between the two teams dating back to the 2017 season. It will only be the second pairing in Newport News after CNU suffered an 8-1 setback in May, 2021.
Christopher Newport is led by sophomore
Raine Weis and junior
Tessa Trate, who qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships last season. Weis wrapped up her first year nationally-ranked in both singles and doubles and will start the Spring ranked regionally in the Atlantic South with Trate as her doubles partner. Johns Hopkins boasts a pair of nationally-ranked players in singles including No. 27 Julia Xiao and No. 36 Kamila Wong. The pair together are also ranked in the Atlantic South regional poll, at No. 9.
Trate and Weis went 6-1 in the Fall while also combining for five wins in singles play.
Megan Bauer and
Kendra Womack also added a pair of wins in singles action during the two tournaments this Fall.
Following the Saturday afternoon tilt, the Captains will return to action on Sunday to host NCAA Division I Hampton University at 10:00 a.m.
