OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Continuing the daunting December drive away from the Freeman Center, the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team will play at Stevenson University (3-4) on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Captains (9-0) will look to remain unbeaten with a third straight game as the road team and the third of eight straight games played away from home this month.
The road-savvy Captains have been up to the task thus far, taking down Haverford (74-44) and North Carolina Wesleyan (90-69) in a pair of road games to start the eight-game run. With those wins, Christopher Newport has continued to close in on the NCAA Division III record for consecutive road victories with 35 straight to lead the nation in men's and women's basketball, across all three levels.
The record could be matched on Saturday as Amherst College holds the current standard at 36 consecutive road wins from Feb 1, 2015 to Feb 10, 2018. The Captains current streak started just 11 months later on January 30, 2019 at St. Mary's (Md.), kickstarting the 35-game roll while playing as the visiting team.
The road winning streak, paired with an equally dominant home roll at 44 consecutive wins, has helped power Christopher Newport to one of the most impressive overall records in Division III basketball history with an 83-2 overall record since late 2019. At the helm for all of it has been head coach
Bill Broderick, who could match a milestone of his own on Saturday with a win to draw even with Carolyn Hunter for the most victories in program history. In just his 11th season, Broderick has accumulated an overall record of 264-43 for an overall winning percentage of 86 percent, ranking fourth all-time in NCAA Division III.
The Captains are coming off another solid defensive performance in which they held a high-powered Battling Bishops to just 69 points. Junior forward
Hannah Kaloi has returned from a nagging injury that kept her out of the first seven games of the season and is making an immediate impact, adding 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Senior
Alivia Giles continues to be the team leader offensively, pouring in 12.1 points per game while also leading the team on the glass with 7.3 rebounds per contest. Giles is knocking down over 60 percent of her shots from the field and would rank in the top-20 nationally in efficiency.
Stevenson will counter the Captains with a dangerous three-point presence and a tough shot-blocker in the paint. Amanda Nwankwo is averaging 1.83 blocks per game for the Mustangs while Tessa Boswell headlines a group that ranks in the top 75 nationally in three-point shooting at 33.1 percent. Boswell ranks 27th in the country while knocking down 44.7 percent and is hitting nearly two-and-a-half triples per contest.
For fans unable to make the trip to Maryland, live stats and a live video webcast will be available online. Links to both can be found at the top of this page as well as on the women's basketball schedule at CNUsports.com.
Following the Saturday afternoon special against Stevenson, the Captains will then trek to Tennessee for a couple in the Music City Classic next week. CNU will open the tournament on December 19 against Grove City College before facing No. 18 Whitman College on Wednesday, December 20.
