NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior forward
Anaya Simmons was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. After helping lead the Captains to a pair of wins last week, Simmons collected her third such honor of the season.
Simmons and the rest of the Captains moved up to No. 3 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 while remaining the top-ranked team in the nation in the WBCA Coaches Poll. Christopher Newport defeated Mary Washington (69-49) and Salisbury (86-38) during the week, downing a pair of C2C opponents while improving to 16-0.
Leading the way, Simmons recorded her sixth double-double of the season against Mary Washington on the road earlier in the week, scoring 18 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. She finished 7-for-11 from the field against the Eagles while adding two assists, one block, and one steal.
Then, in the Captains' lone home game of January, Simmons helped protect the Freeman Center floor by scoring eight points on 3-of-6 shooting. She snagged 10 rebounds, posted three assists, and one steal. With the win, CNU extended the team's second-longest home winning sreak in program history with a 35th straight win on C.J. Woollum Court.
The WIlliamsburg, Va. native continues to lead a dominant Captains' front court by ranking third nationally in field-goal percentage (.640) and 25th in offensive rebounds per game (4.4). Simmons is second among active Division III players in career field-goal percentage and tenth among all active NCAA student-athletes, including Division I, II, and III. Despite averaging less than 20 minutes per game over the first 72 games of her career, Simmons is just 99 points shy of 1,000 for her career while shooting 61.6 percent from the field.
This is the fourth Conference Player of the Week selection for the Captains with Simmons earning back-to-back picks on November 28 and December 5 followed by
Sondra Fan earning the designation on January 3.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday, January 18 as they travel to Southern Virginia University. The 6:00 p.m. tip kicks off another four-game road trip over the next two weeks that includes trips to Marymount University, Pratt Institute, and New Jersey City University.
