NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 14 at 2:00 p.m. as they play host to Salisbury University (6-12). The Captains are riding a 15-game winning streak overall this season while moving up to No. 1 in the nation according to the Women's Basktball Coaches Association (WBCA).
The matchup against the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe will tip at the Freeman Center as Christopher Newport attempts to add to a 34-game home winning streak, the second-longest in program history. Christopher Newport and Salisbury will be meeting for the 40th time in the all-time series with the Captains owning a 27-12 lead in the matchup. CNU has won 12 straight dating back to the 2015-16 season including six straight on the home floor.
With her appearance against Mary Washington on Wednesday, graduate student
Sondra Fan has now played in 100 career games for the Captains. In her 100th career game, she scored nine points and moved past Tia Perry for 12th on the all-time scoring chart at CNU, with 1,281 career points. Fan is now just seven shy of Jessica Moore for 11th and will enter the top-ten in CNU lore after 45 more points this season.
This season, Fan and senior forward
Anaya Simmons are leading the way offensively with 14.1 and 13.7 points per game, respectively. Simmons ranks second in the nation in field-goal percentage, knocking down 64.7 percent of her shots after leading the nation in shooting percentage a year ago.
Camille Malagar has stepped into the starting point guard role with
Gabbi San Diego out with an injury; Malagar has 10 assists and just two turnovers in three games in the starting five while adding 19 points. Senior
Katy Rader is among the league leaders in steals with a team-high 35 and joins Simmons and
Hannah Kaloi as the only players to start all 15 games this season. Rader is averaging 7.1 points per game while Kaloi is pouring in 9.4 points per game with 4.8 rebounds per contest.
Salisbury is led by Ashlynn Burrows as the only Sea Gull to start all 18 games played so far this season. Burrows is averaging a team-high 10.2 points per game while adding 82 rebounds (4.6 per game) in just under 29 minutes per game. Abby Wilkinson is also scoring 9.2 points per game while veteran Emily Dilger is leading the team in rebounding with 6.4 boards per game.
Following the Saturday afternoon matchup with the Sea Gulls, the Captains will hit the road for a four-game swing starting on Wednesday, January 18 at Southern Virginia University.
