BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Rewriting the history books, the Christopher Newport cross country teams saw a slew of standouts register all-time performances during a solid outing at the prestigious Paul Short Run on Friday afternoon at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus Course.
Overall, seven Captains improved their times on the school's all-time performance list, including
John Vogel, who threw down the 14th-fastest 8k clocking in program history.
Aided by the historic efforts, the men finished 27th in the Brown 8k, which included some of the top programs from all three levels of the NCAA. The Captains eventually posted a score of 776, which placed them higher than 11 Division I programs in the final team standings.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, Christopher Newport finished 43rd overall with a score of 1023. That placed the Captains above three Division I schools.
Leading the way on Friday, Vogel finished 101st in the 8k with a time of 25:22.0. That not only moved him to 14th on the school's all-time performance list, but it also shaved nearly 40 seconds off his previous PR of 26:01.8, which he established earlier this month at the NCAA South Regional Preview.
Shortly after Vogel, three other Captains also topped their personal-best marks from the Regional Preview.
Nathanael Ferrante finished in 25:29.8, which marked the 22nd-fastest time in program history. Less than five seconds later,
Daniel Ferrante crossed in 25:34.5, which placed him 23rd on the all-time charts.
Just after the men's history-makers,
Nick Tolarchyk followed in 25:54.7.
Following the team's top-four,
Luke Hawkins also scored for the squad while wrapping up the event in 26:46.1. Also cracking the 28-minute mark,
Chaney Arick set a personal-best in 26:52.7, while
Cooper Albright sliced over 30 seconds off his PR after finishing in 27:23.0.
The women also had four runners break into the school's all-time top-40 while notching their finest efforts with the program.
Madi Rawlings finished at the front of the pack with a time of 23:17.8. That placed her 171st overall. Although that clocking just missed matching her PR, it did establish a new course-best for the junior star, topping her time of 23:47.9 from 2021.
After Rawlings, three straight Captains clocked in with personal-best marks. Freshman speedster
Megan Smith finished in 23:38.2, which moved her to 32nd in school history. Shortly thereafter,
Eliza Dana crossed in 23:39.1, while
Lex McGrail finished in 23:43.9. Those efforts rank 33rd and 35th in program lore, respectively.
Capping off the squad's top-five,
Mae Savoie concluded the event in 23:45.4. Four seconds later,
Adalyn Perez posted a time of 23:49.8, which moved her to 36th on the school's all-time charts.
Christopher Newport also had multiple competitors take part in the open races earlier in the day. During the 8k,
Jason Sangiuliano led the men's runners with a time of 27:52.3. Meanwhile, the women's 6k competitors were paced by
Libby Miles, who finished in 24:43.7.
The Captains will be back in action on October 14 when the squad heads to Kernersville, North Carolina for the VertCross Invitational.
