MECHANICSVILLE, Va. -- The Christopher Newport cross country teams will kick off the 2022 campaign on Saturday morning when the Captains take part in the Spider Alumni Open at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Virginia.
The men will head out for the 6k at 9 a.m., while the women will take part in the 4k beginning 50 minutes later. Overall, 18 teams are slated to participate in the competition, including a dozen Division I programs and Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington.

Entering the competition, the men's team currently ranks 35th in the USTFCCCA National Preseason Coaches Poll. Meanwhile, the men are slotted third and the women sit fourth in the South Region.
Christopher Newport returns four All-Conference performers from last year. The men welcome back
Daniel Ferrante and
Nick Tolarchyk, while the women will feature
Madi Rawlings and
Mae Savoie. Additionally, Ferrante, Rawlings, and
Nathanael Ferrante garnered All-Region nods in 2021.
In addition to the award-winning contingent, the Captains bring back a talented group of veterans. The men's team includes three seniors with
Cooper Albright and
Sam Koltisko joining Tolarchyk as the most experienced competitors. The women have eight seniors, including fifth-year standout
Claire Garster.
Following Saturday's meet, Christopher Newport will return to action on September 16 when the Captains host the NCAA South Regional Preview at Lee Hall Mansion.
